For me, top prize has to go to former President Richard Milhous Nixon when he stated, "Well, I'm not a crook!" in the wake of Watergate and virtually all of his top White House aides having to resign. Instead of waiting to be impeached because of the Watergate scandal and his part in the cover-up, he resigned his office on August 9, 1974. He bears the distinction of being the only American president to do so. His successor, Gerald Ford, later pardoned him for any and all Federal offenses he may have committed while in office. Side: I Am NOT A Crook
