I've been here for four plus years and...I've never found one.

What is the point of Ally, Enemy, and Hostile?

By using this system you can identify those that are extremely stupid with ease. This is a debate site and when someone makes you their enemy they have just revealed that they have no ability to debate.

Ally request means that they like your style or your side of a debate.

Hostile, no idea at all.

I don't use this feature unless someone request to be my ally, I always accept. To declare an enemy only admits defeat. Just look at the losers with an enemy list.

Allies are people you consider to have the same opinions as you and support your arguments/disputes. They are more aware of your new debates and contribute more frequently than others to them.

Enemies are the people you commonly conflict with in a large number of situations.

Hostiles are people who have classed you as their enemy, and you may not have listed them as yours yet.

I don't think any of them should take away/ award up-votes or down-votes because it may be only you who disagrees/ agrees with them. It makes the system unfair, because if a person isn't liked by the majority of CreateDebate, they are going to end up with negative numbers, etc. It's bitter.

In my opinion all this "group" stuff is a bunch of hogwash. I state my opinion reply to those who have an argument with that opinion then move on. There are two sides to any debate and all opinions have equal validity, unless of course one side is pushing that perverse liberal ideology, disagree with any facet of that and you have created a whole host of hostile enemies. Question: What's the difference between a "hostile" and an "enemy"?

i'm starting to understand the "support"/"dispute" things too...

for debates where there are two sides, it has more to do with with flipping your position on the issue that it does with what the person said.

i kept having to "switch" my side back to the one i wanted to stay with, as i was "disputing" things others have said.

its kind of tricky and i don't see many ppl being rigorous about maintaining a consistent position as they comment.

Well, I did present both increased and decreased effectiveness. It doesn't have to go one way or the other.

For your specific example, it could be implemented where only enemies (mutual) can affect each other's voting weight. Just imagine the difference between doubling and halving the voting power of your enemies.

When a person down votes, they themselves also get their points reduced by one. The idea is that if really hate what the person wrote, you would be willing to sacrifice one of your points to let your feelings be known.

that's good to know, i just tested it and you're right, you do lose a point for down voting someone.

what happens when you "dispute" someone?

It adds an interesting and a heightened dimension of entertainment to the forum and, in the main, identifies those who are inherently opposed to your own opinions, ideologies or manner of expression. The weakness of the facility is that today's ally may be tomorrow's enemy, and vice versa. My position is that I am not bigoted nor prejudiced, I hate everyone with equal loathing.

The idea about allies and enemies is that if you create a debate that you think your allies will enjoy, you can have the link emailed to your allies. Conversely, if create a debate that you know will irritate your enemies, you can have the link emailed to them ;)

I have lots of allies. They know what I'm about. The handful of enemies never got it.

This is irrelevant but why is it so amusing to switch between two accounts when you know everyone knows that the account is your alt anyway? Why don't you just stick to your original account?

I don't know.

So... no one has commented about the possibility of increasing/decreasing point metrics regarding allies/enemies...
