What perks would a cult need to get you to join?

If I could find a cult where I could do terrible things all week and then go in once a week and pray for forgiveness and have my slate wiped clean and then convince myself that I was better than everyone who didn't do and believe the same things as me - I'd be interested.

Ok, not really.

Hello bront:

Some sexual debauchery would be a start.. Plus, a gourmet kitchen, a nice bed, and some people to clean up. Oh, and a 90" HD TV too..

I knew an individual who joined a church to get health insurance.

If they had a message like love your neighbor, turn the other cheek, do unto others as you'd have done to you, peace and compassion and tolerance and kindness, etc, then I might be swayed. But if they add a bunch of hokus pokus and fire and brimstone and angry judgment and persecution to the mix then no way.

Years ago, when I was searching for answers, I joined the Rosicrucians. A cult that does no harm and largely keeps to themselves. Like any other religious group, I found "facts" hard to come by so I dropped out. The only "perk" that could get me to join would be believable "facts" that made me have FAITH. I have found NO cult (religion) that came up with ANY. So, I will remain a satisfied Atheist.

If they spread love and joy, donated and helped others, did what they could to not only better the world but themselves and PRACTICED what they preached in terms of acceptance of others and generosity, love and kindness, then I might.
