What role does art play in our society?

What is its significance?
Add New Argument

Art is meant to supplement an idea to appeal to human aesthetics. It is therefore largely redundant, particularly "art for the sake of art". Art has played a huge role, for example, in eliciting passion for a cause or to prove a point. That role only appeals to the human emotional side (which is important of course) but dwarfs rationality of an argument, which I think should be priority.

To summarize: I think art has its place, but only on 1. a practical 2. and purely emotional (intimate) level.

I think that art's role has largely diminished with the influx of technology in our world. Many people who used to appreciate are more are now turning to alternative sources of entertainment such as TV, video games, the Internet, etc.

I don't believe that the role of art has diminished at all. It has merely changed. I think that the "alternate sources" that you mentioned are all new forms of art. The video game industry alone employs tons of artists for detailing environments and backgrounds, as well as visually creating characters. They also use writers to create stories that, as a gamer, I can interact with for 100+ hrs on my favorite RPG. The Internet is also introducing new art forms in the way of video blogs and web shows. Now anyone with a camera and a computer can record, edit, and post their videos on-line. Now I'll be the first to say that 90% of everything one youtube is crap, but the other 10% REALLY shines through.

What role does it not play? Everything in our lives is shaped by art. It affects who we are attracted to, and how we hook up with them. They shape our ideas of morality, politics and religion. Even technology is shaped by the concepts first originated in Science Fiction. I challenge anyone to name an aspect of human society that has not been shaped by art.
