What's your opinion on Astrology?

Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world. (Quoting Wiki) Do you think it has merit, or is it a load of >insert profanity here<?

Add New Argument

It's complete and utter codswallop. The position of planets does not decide, symbolise or display anything about human affairs and doesn't show the future.

A point for the use of the world "codswallop". Very unusual.

:-P :-D

I love using my very British vocabulary.

It's complete bullshitt! But probably about as accurate as our best scientists.

Well, if we go with the first couple of words from Wikipedia: "Astrology consists of several pseudoscientific systems..."

Strictly for dreamers and those who are incapable of formulating their own strategy for success in life and hope that their fortune is somehow determined by the position of the stars as interpreted by confident tricksters.

I agree with you but your belief in an imaginary friend (God) is equally pathetic.

My opinion on astrology: It is utterly absurd and a complete waste of anyone's time engaging in it.

1 point

it does not belong in the "science" section... just my opinion

I guess I could have put it in General or maybe World?

I put it into science because I thought the alignment of planets, etc, related to it.

Astrology aside, on the other hand what about the Zodiac star signs.

A number of people I have met are quite typical of the definition of their signs.

Maybe there is an influence upon when we are born.....and thereafter are on our own.....?

1 point

I suppose it's possible, but is there any scientific proof to support this?

Nope. No proof at all, I am afraid.

But there is a LOT of reasons why there is very little possibility that it could be accurate. Or even considered a science, for that matter. Astrology as never passed any objective and Empirical scientific challenge or experiment that has been put to it. And there have been many.

A number of people will be atypical as well.

It is just confirmation bias.

The ocean currents are affected by the moon. I think astrology is interesting. I view astrology for entertainment, however, there are some definite traits regarding the signs of the Zodiac.

It is the oceanic TIDES, not currents that are effected by the pull of the moon's gravity as it orbits around the Earth.

But the moon is not a planet in our solar system, only a satellite. And it is a mere 240,000 miles away. Thus even a smallish body like it (about 1100 mi. radius) can exert some affects on us.

The real planets in our solar system are a different matter. They are way too far away to have any measurable effect on us. Mars for example: 250 million miles away! do the math and you see this is a good 1000 times times as far away as the moon!

For comparison's sake: this is equal to the difference of you driving 30 minutes to the next town for shopping, as compared to sailing around the entire World! LOL

Astrology to me is mostly entertainment. Sometimes it's fun to read my horoscope. As well as to learn all the signs of the Zodiac and the traits that people born under those signs are supposed to have. And then to see if they really do fit.

As a scientist, and as somebody pretty well-educated in the fields of Astronomy and Cosmology, I really see no possible way that the positions of the planets and the various constellations could affect us humans here on Earth. Neither when we were born or during our lives. There is simply no medium or mechanism which would cause Astrology to influence us. The gravitational pull is non-existent. Those constellations that are named after animals are not even real. They bear no resemblance to those animals, except maybe from one angle and even then it is a very very nebulous and spurious likeness.

Plus, they are 3D and so in their positions in real space, they mean nothing as compared to the various Signs. Also, different cultures have different signs and meaning for these same constellations. Proof there is no one single correct significance.

Plus, considering the vastness of the Cosmos--hundreds of Billions of galaxies--the planets and stars (Houses) used for our Zodiac comprise such a small amount of it, a sliver, that it is like looking at maybe one footprint on one spot of sand on one beach, our of all the world.s beaches. Thus, insignificant in the strongest sense of the word.

Also, the positions have changed since those Sign were first invented hundreds of years ago. If you were, for example, born a Capricorn (my sign) 30 years ago than today due to the shift of the galaxy and our own solar system, you are not a Capricorn any longer.

BUT the thing is that my ex-wife was highly learned in Astrology. And she actually would do Natal and Progressed Charts for people. And I have seen her correctly tell some client things about their lives that she had no way of knowing. I found this curious, and for awhile I lent a little possibility to the veracity of "thorough" Astrology. That is: NOT in the horoscope you get in the newspaper, never ,because that only takes into account your Sun Sign. But I thought maybe if somebody did your entire chart, showing ALL the planets' positions, including your ruling planets, that maybe they could discern something the mere Sun Signs could not.

And I have met many people who fit exactly their Sign's traits.

What to make of this?

At the end of the day I had to go with mere coincidence, as well as me engaging in what is called cherry plucking and confirmation bias. That is: choosing some stuff that fits where you want it to, while ignoring the stuff that does not.

As a Taurus I am skeptical of these types of things.

Astrology is a load of bullsh't

It's a pagan religion, superstition. It should be renounced and avoided.
