What should be the default value of a new argument?
Currently, a new argument counts as one point. This isn't unreasonable, until we find reasons for posters making multiple arguments:
"Sorry, forgot to say _____"
"I agree! Nothing to add"
Carrying out an extensive one-on-one discussion, such that few will bother to read the whole thing or vote on it
I dunno. Just my thoughts. Yours?

Well, it starts as one to add a point to your side. If you take that away, the sides will be equal even if there are 100 arguments for the debate and 2 against it, until people begin voting for other debates (sometimes I'm lazy and don't do this.) Since we all start at 1, I would consider this neutral ground. Also, for the multiple posters, there is always down voting! :) Side: one

I'm assuming the arguments start at one because in theory many debaters will post one argument per debate. Thus it functions as a combination head count/ efficiency rating. I guess the simplest way to voice my objection is that One is positive, Zero is neutral. Considering a lot of the people that come on this site, one point is pretty optimistic. The value of the argument should be determined by votes only, not vote total plus one. Side: Zero

I agree. Nothing to add. ;) Yes, I do agree. That way, one point would signify something. Negative numbers would truly be negative, and positive numbers would truly mean positive feedback. But how would the reward point system work, then? Would you still receive a point for contributing, or do you only get a point if you are given positive feedback? Will points be subtracted when you are downvoted? That could be more of an incentive to write good arguments, but if your enemy decides to downvote all your stuff, that could do major damage to your points. I'm getting off topic, but there would have to be some other changes to take place in order for this to work. Side: Zero
Well, I think it might work well with the suggestion that all down-votes should include a rebuttal, and all votes are non-anonymous. It wouldn't stop all the pettiness, but then again I've never been entangled in it :) What specifically are reward points? Are those the counts for the contests? Because it seems like those are messed up by users who make tons of frivolous posts anyway. Side: Zero
