What should we do about world hunger?
Many starve. Lots are obese. What do we do?
"More than 80 percent of the corn we grow and more than 95 percent of the oats are fed to livestock. The world’s cattle alone consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people—more than the entire human population on Earth. According to the Worldwatch Institute, “Roughly 2 of every 5 tons of grain produced in the world is fed to livestock, poultry, or fish; decreasing consumption of these products, especially of beef, could free up massive quantities of grain and reduce pressure on land." http://www.peta.org/about-peta/faq/ Assuming we should do anything whatsoever about it, the best approach would be to reconfigure the underlying economic structures that have resulted in a largely dysfunctional (inter)national food infrastructure system. Realistically, however, that is rather unlikely; other alternatives are ultimately only temporary and inadequate quick fixes that fail to address the actual problem in a substantive way. Although world hunger is a major problem, where would we find enough resources to eradicate it? And if we were to find the resources, would the holder actually give away it without any economic advantages. Probably not, which means world hunger will inevitably reside in society and will not disappear. The world will always be hungry. There will be a point, if some kind of super-tech doesnt emerge, that a balance between population and food production will meet. It may be tragic in life loss before the balance is achieved. Or maybe a balance will never be achieved, it may forever fluctuate between dieing of starvation to plenty of food. So I suggest you just live your life, eat your favorite food, and quit thinking about it. 1
