What works better? A peaceful protest or a violent revolution?

I have been reading a little into Gandhi and he is quoted for giving such lines as "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." He went down in history for his very successful peaceful protests. But when asked if his tactics would have worked on Hitler and his Nazi's, even he wasn't sure.

I don't think it would have. I think if he tried that stuff on Hitler, he would have been killed on the spot.

Now if you have checked out my profile, you know I side with violent revolution, but I want to see what you guys think. In your opinion, what works better?

A "violent revolution" might work in the sense that by force you can physically change things if you have enough people to do so. I think that in order to truly have a revolution however, people's ideas are what needs to be changed. Not who physically occupies a particular spot of land or calls themselves by a certain label.

Changing a person's ideas cannot be done violently. If physical change is brought about in a violent way, and most people don't believe in the "revolution," society will just revert back. If most people don't understand why a change was needed in the first place, how can it be sustained?

I think that peaceful protest is the most effective and sustainable way to achieve a revolution. Change happens on the individual level. That's why we're here on a debating site, isn't it?

It's a bit hard to choose, I'm kind of on both sides. A peaceful protest may work long term, but only if you can pull it off. If you can't pull it off then countless people die for no reason, and even if you do pull it off it can takes decades for any change drastic to occur. A Violent revolution, if successful, is quite quick and usually works long term as well. However if a violent revolution goes wrong then it can do more harm than good. So yeah, I'm kinda indifferent.
