What would Russia have to do?
Russia presents itself as a "super power" but in reality it turns around less money than California or Italy. I would keep provoking them for a while because I know that they do not have the necessary cash to keep it running. Russia is under serious sanctions that do have serious effect on their weak and obsolete economy and Russia is already waging war in Ukraine. They will have to withdraw in few months or end up as Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Just keep poking them and they fall apart on their own. 1

Actually at this point that would be direct confrontation considering the annexation. Do you believe that the United States positioning troops along the Russian border (be it within a non-Russian Crimea or outside Russian Crimea) is going to do anything other than further escalate the situation and essentially create a second cold war? Additionally, don't you think that would serve as great propaganda for Putin, which would allow him to tout it to Russia as vindication that the West is about to attack? That would simply boost the morale of Putin's administration and lead to a justification for further evil mastermind nonsense. 1
