Another way (but not the only way) to frame this question is: If you got to implement your utopia, your own vision of what society should be (whatever that looks like) what would you do with the people who disagree with you and your vision that you brought into being? - Hitler killed them or put them in camps to be enslaved or tortured. - Orthodox Muslim nations imprison, kill, exile, or condemn to second class citizenship those who do not want the society to be subject to Sharia. In a free and fair society, the answer is nothing; you would do nothing with or to the people who wanted something different. Side: Like this

Hello, Amarel. This position cannot be defended in all cases. It depends on what it is that people want different and what they do for their own cause. Fair enough. It depends on what is entailed in the phrase wanted something different and whether the society is actually fair. If the utopia is actually fair, and if wanted entails actions, and if those actions regarding something different include violating the sanctity of someone's person or property, then absolutely, the "do nothing" principle does not apply. This is because basic fairness (as well as societal stability and prosperity) requires the respect of people's persons and property. In order to remain fair, whatever the other structures or configurations of the utopia, the society must protect people's persons and property in order to maintain not only the utopia, but also the society. If on the other hand, wanted does NOT entail actions, OR if those actions regarding something different do NOT include violating the sanctity of someone's person or property, then absolutely, the "do nothing" principle must apply. Otherwise, the society is NOT actually fair. This is because basic fairness requires the respect of people's persons and property, even by those seeking to uphold the utopia. However, I recognize that these principles are very broadly painted. You are totally correct that there is definitely room for quibbling about the details, like whether slander constitutes violating person or property, what constitutes validly protected revolution or civil disobedience, and whether law actually constitutes a valid contract between government and the people. Certainly the answers people settle on after the quibbling set the parameters for both the utopia and the exceptions to the "do nothing" rule. Thanks for your input. It was a critical contribution. Lemme expand on my above answer.. Life isn't fair. The good ole US of A isn't fair. But, it's the FAIREST place in the world Good thing those gun toting, white, Christian men founded such a nation with rights endowed by our creator. If they'd been today's Democrats, they would have let the Redcoats stay and demanded censored speech of descenters, all after letting the redcoats continue to tax the hell out of the tea, & there sure as hell wouldn't have been any "God given rights", now would there?
