I have two sons but I'm not going to add their names here, out of respect for their privacy. But I will add a few perspectives on names.

1) Every prospective parent should think of some funny names so when people really pester them about it they can toss examples out there. We had a whole hot pepper theme going, suggesting names like Tabasco, Sriracha, Cayenne, Jalapeno (Hal for short), etc.

2) My wife and I think it absurd that some parents don't have a name ready by the time of birth. Heck, you had many months to think and talk about it, just get it done.

3) Parents should consider all the ways a name might be teased. If you really want to name your son Richard there is nothing wrong with that but then don't be surprised sometime if your kid is crying because someone called him Dick.

4) Parents should consider what the initials will be, for the same reason as 3.

5) Parents should consider if using an unusual spelling will be welcome by their kid after a lifetime of correcting people who assume otherwise. Little Jawney may be pissed at you someday that they weren't simply Johnny.

6) Meanings can be fun, but people get too hung up on them. Most of their lives when people say your kid's name they're not also thinking "ooh, that name means strong".

7) Ethnic or culturally connected names are fun and there's nothing wrong with them but we've all met people given such a name where we immediately thought to ourselve "yeah, your parents gave you that name because they want you to embrace your heritage, but I bet you'd rather simply be a Bob"

8) Names with "-son" on them sound cool but are they really "-son" of that name? Was Harrison the son of Harris? If you as the father are named Kevin should you really be naming your son Harrison?

As you can see my wife and I debated this extensively back in the day. But we're done dishing out names now.

Actually I have no idea. When the time comes, the Lord will give me a name for my child
