When to Punish and When to Rehabilitate

When minors commit violent crimes, should they be treated differently from adults? Is prison effective as a punishment or a deterrent for juveniles?

In my mind, the point of any criminal justice system should be to discourage and prevent future crimes.

As such, punishments are only effective if they serve as an effective threat against others who may think of committing crimes and/or help prevent the person involved from engaging in future criminal activity.

So, in my opinion, there is no absolute in this situation.

I agree, there is no absolute

Some people respond to kindness, some to discipline, some to punishment, there is no one size fits all strategy, which is what policy makers and bureaucrats usually look for, however, though a dynamic and flexible justice system sounds good in theory, like so many strategies it doesn't work consistently in reality

So in the end we need to fit the response to the crime and that takes effort and resources.

You have two options.

1) kill

2) make law abiding

If you use any other option, you are being irrational and wasting resources.
