You wanna blast Gandalf? You'll just make him stronger. Then he'll knock your ass right outta the shire. And what's your plastic blaster gonna do against Balrog?
It could be argued that star wars also carried fantasy elements with the force, and the number of supernatural forces including witches found in the books
Science fiction has many more legendary films than fantasy although has strong showings like LOTR and Harry Potter, but those don't match up to the likes of The Matrix, Terminator, Alien, Predator, Star Wars, Star Trek, Blade Runner, and Donnie Darko.
Blade is the Wesley Snipes movie about a half Vampire, Vampire Hunter, Blade Runner is the Science Fiction film with Harrison Ford. Both very good films but very different.
I really like them both but I find Sci-fi films and shows generally turn out a lot better, quite possible because Fantasy requires time-period dialogue, something a lot of actors fail miserably at. They try to talk like they're living in ancient times, and they end up just sounding like they're Scottish and talking with their mouth full. Not to say Sci-fi acting is always better (anyone who has seen Episodes I-III will agree with me), but generally speaking it's not hard to watch with a straight face.
I should also note that "Game of Thrones" is a major point for fantasy as a genre; it's like if LOTR was twice as badass and then made into a TV show. I haven't seen any recent sci-fi that can compete with it in any area, from special effects to acting; plot to soundtrack, "Game of Thrones" is fucking awesome.
Sci-fi is better. I can't name many fantasy movies that were good. LoTR was alright I guess... it would have been better if those gay hobbits weren't in it.
I love 'em both, but Science Fiction, let's be honest, has more potential for new storylines, plots, and characters. Besides, SciFi often presictts future developments!
I like science fiction better. It makes me feel that there are possibilities that things can really happen in our world. Fantasy is just imaginative. Science fiction is somehow based on something.
A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. Ten books and about 10000 pages, don't remember total words. Should be the most EPIC series out there. Definitely worth a read if you like high fantasy.
A site I found a while ago. http://bestfantasybooks.com/ So far hasn't missed with good suggestions. Even has a top sci fi list.
I love both although it's not easy to find decent film versions of the books i've loved. Why when Hollywood makes a film they think they have to change a story so it's totally unrecognisable from the book is beyond me.
I didn't choose this side because I particularly love fantasy, but because I'm not a major fan of sci-fi. Fantasy novels and movies are pretty good anyway, but recently, everything has shifted towards vampires and werewolves. It's starting to annoy me.
So...
My favorite genre is now dystopia. I. Love. It. Dystopian books are just amazing. To all: Begin reading dystopian novels. They will open your minds. :)
I think the whole Vampire and Werewolf thing is just trying to cash in on Twilight but the Lonely Werewolf Girl books are good and include Fairies, Elementals and all sorts and well worth a read.
Longevity drugs. Having children banned, and illegal kids kept in places like concentration camps where they're told that they're worthless and their parents are criminals. Everyone is old.
Have you read this satirical article called 'A Modest Proposal' by Jonathan Swift? It's satirical, so he doesn't mean it, but it describes a future world where children would be used as food and clothing. It's very much dystopian... kinda funny, in a slightly nauseous kind of way.
I should be too busy to read too.... but I still read. A lot. I'm developing this habit of reading one book, reaching half-way, finding another book and starting that one. I think I have like 3 or 4 books that I've started and not finished, ugh. I can't seem to find that one book that keeps me interested... well, I did: 'The Abduction' by John Grisham (he makes me want to be a lawyer, lol), but yah. It's a problem.
I'm a geek for both, but I generally enjoy fantasy book. Espescially one book series that I really enjoy that I've been reading for quite a while, titled "The Last Apprentice."
