Which is better in the classroom...blogs or wikkis?
The modern classroom needs to find innovative ways to allow students to express themselves. Express you self by stating your position with citations where possible for or against blogs or wikkis.

I would support the idea of using Wikis in the classroom. This facilitates the learner being the constructor of his/her learning. The learner would need to research, analyse and problem solve an area before the publish their contribution to the site. This make for a well informed and critical thinker who contributes to his learning. Side: For Blog or Wikki

Wikki are also suited for collaborative learning since many persons can edit each page. This will help develop students learning styles and encourage peer to peer interaction which is highly recommended by Vygotsky' in his theory of peer to peer interaction. This will foster a more humanistic approach and foster better professional relationships among peers. Side: For Blog or Wikki
Well said naresh, our 21st century learners need to develop skills in learning to work collaboratively which facilitates their development for the world of work. Students need to develop tolerance, respect and teamwork as they work towards the completion of a project. Side: For Blog or Wikki

This is a healthy activity in that as well as being able to accept criticisms, it forces you to now look at a different viewpoints and then engage in further research which brings new information to light whereby you are now in a better position to accept the person's position or refute the point by justifying why this is so. I would also agree with using both in the classroom. For the purpose of assessment, the teacher can use a wiki and have the students add their input as authors. The link to the wiki can be placed on the Classroom Blog where the teacher would be the administrator and have the students comment on the posts. By using wikis for group projects it would foster a collaborative learning approach and lends itself to constructivism. Imagine giving a group of students an assignment to develop a wiki. The students would develop that wiki and other students around the world can see the work of other students. The teacher can have a main blog which would contain questions or post for tips on doing the assignment etc. Side: For Blog or Wikki

I would just like to add that there are those who are still afraid of using a computer so this may not apply to them. Those individuals are of the belief that if they touch the computer it would "spoil" or "mash up". There are those teachers who are also "Well seasoned" and don't need to " learn new tricks" because they are "on their way out" so they would not use the tech to the benefit of the student. Therefore the tech may not be easy for them to learn. Side: Against Blog or Wikki

KattyChris yes wiki people can change your work but that a good thing to see people different views and options. But according to Lev Vygotsky in his Social Learning Theories he states: Social learning theories help us to understand how people learn in social contexts (learn from each other) and informs us on how we, as teachers, construct active learning communities. So i think its a learning process. In essence, Vygotsky recognizes that learning always occurs and cannot be separated from a social context. Consequently, instructional strategies that promote the distribution of expert knowledge where students collaboratively work together to conduct research, share their results, and perform or produce a final project, help to create a collaborative community of learners. I support blog and Wikis in the Classroom, since Blogs consist of “posts” followed by “comments.” Multiple posts often appear together, with the newest posts appearing at the top. For courses, blog posts can be structured using current lecture topics to extend classroom discussion. Students can make comments about posts or other comments, making the information more interactive. In addition to promoting discussion, blogs can also contain pictures and other multimedia, such as music or video. Blogs can appeal to students who learn by using an integrated, multi-media approach. Brescia and Miller (2015) studied the advantages of instructional blogging. The pros from Brescia and Miller (2015) of blogging are: students feel more involved and in charge of their learning experiences; students have viable chances to participate in learning; and students have a chance to actively participate in learning outside of the classroom. On the other hand, Wikis are websites that allow any user to modify a page. With wikis students can edit any information on the wiki, not just information they have posted. The Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) recently published an article on wikis and course management: http://jolt.merlot.org/vol4no2/ Side: For Blog or Wikki

I support you fully here Katty. This is really my main issue with Wikis. Once someone's work has been published it can easily be deleted by another malicious user. This needs to be guarded against. Blogs on the other hand facilitates the protection of one's work, as it cannot be modified but simply commented upon. Side: For Blog or Wikki

On the other hand KattyChris It’s important for faculty to budget time to provide adequate feedback. Spending more time reading and responding earlier in the semester seemed to help prevent problems later. Setting a deadline by which students must comment was very important to allow time to read and respond. Considered setting a word limit to make reading the students’ comments more manageable and to aid the students in learning to be more succinct in their writing. Side: Against Blog or Wikki

One of the problems with blogs is that it is usually opinion based rather than fact based. Wikis usually have peer assessment to verify if data is accurate whereas with the blog there is usually only one moderator and they would have potential biases. So in that case blogs have the potential to be biased where as the wiki may not be as prone to bias Side: Against Blog or Wikki
Actually, the blogs and wikkis are not available to everyone, and most importantly every child is not provided internet. So, it makes a little difficult so they cannot be with other students and they will be lacking behind. My propose is live teaching is best than older matter saved in wikki. But blog is better than wikki coz it helps to keep update with the people. Side: Against Blog or Wikki
