Which is better in the classroom...blogs or wikkis?

The modern classroom needs to find innovative ways to allow students to express themselves. Express you self by stating your position with citations where possible for or against blogs or wikkis.

Blogs and wikis provide ways to quickly share information on a site, without requiring advanced tools or expertise. They are often easier for people to update than a formal document or traditional Web site.

please chose which you are supporting either blog or wikki.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

I am supporting blogs and Wiki? A blog is a regularly updated website or webpage, typically run by one individual.

I like using blogs because it enables you to write down your thoughts on anything that interests you

Sherman i agree with the point you highlighted here. This means that there is no need to learn technical skills such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) which can be quite cumbersome for some users especially at the primary school level.

Wiki there are a wide range of open source software wiki's to choose from therefore no licensing cost for installation or to any institute is given

I would support the idea of using Wikis in the classroom. This facilitates the learner being the constructor of his/her learning. The learner would need to research, analyse and problem solve an area before the publish their contribution to the site. This make for a well informed and critical thinker who contributes to his learning.

yes giss , i agree that Wikis use in the classroom can enhance the learning process.

WIKIS In the classroom
Side: For Blog or Wikki

i agree with you Giss since wikki is a group of interlinked pages each with a unique name. Students at both levels can use this to facilitate group projects SBA etc.

I do not believe that wikis enable the learner to construct his/her own learning for someone else could edit/change the data. Also, since people do not have to register for a wiki, someone can actually mess around with your stuff.

Side: Against Blog or Wikki

Blogs a re also very quick and easy to set up. Persons do not need much technical knowledge in setting up a blog. This is a vital point since students at the secondary level can construct a blog on any topic and have a discussion

However, Mr siewahnaresh students who are unsure about exposing their work to the group, may also be timid about commenting (i.e. read, criticize) on their classmates’ work.

But Sherman, what you put in a wiki is also exposed to others and it is even worse in wikis for it allows others to edit your work. I think that this would affect the student even more.

I am supporting Blogs for it enables the writing to be reflective of the author. A person can discuss their thoughts on many different topics like music, movies, politics , etc

Side: For Blog or Wikki

Wikki are also suited for collaborative learning since many persons can edit each page. This will help develop students learning styles and encourage peer to peer interaction which is highly recommended by Vygotsky' in his theory of peer to peer interaction. This will foster a more humanistic approach and foster better professional relationships among peers.

Well said naresh, our 21st century learners need to develop skills in learning to work collaboratively which facilitates their development for the world of work. Students need to develop tolerance, respect and teamwork as they work towards the completion of a project.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

One of the features i like about Wiki is it enables users to edit each other entries. Wiki can also be used as a discussion function to talk about disputed points of an entry. Wiki is similar to a discussion board but less structured

This is the feature that I dislike the most. Two people can't make changes at the same time without one person's information getting deleted.

Side: Against Blog or Wikki

Wikis are content document centered. it is editable website with a complete version history kept. Also one of the main aim is to reach a consensus or compromise on the content of the page

Side: For Blog or Wikki

Wikis are normal used to collaborate and synthesize:

1. Group projects

2. group authoring of academic papers

3. Collaborative writing

But though it may be time consuming it ensures that the information shared is relevant and up-to-date. Information shared yesterday quickly changes and modifications may need to be adjusted to reflect such.

Blog: People can leave comments on your blog. This is good since you hear other persons views and opinion and have a very health discussion

Side: For Blog or Wikki

This is a healthy activity in that as well as being able to accept criticisms, it forces you to now look at a different viewpoints and then engage in further research which brings new information to light whereby you are now in a better position to accept the person's position or refute the point by justifying why this is so.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

Blog also allow other users to read other individuals blog and also make comments

I would also agree with using both in the classroom. For the purpose of assessment, the teacher can use a wiki and have the students add their input as authors. The link to the wiki can be placed on the Classroom Blog where the teacher would be the administrator and have the students comment on the posts. By using wikis for group projects it would foster a collaborative learning approach and lends itself to constructivism. Imagine giving a group of students an assignment to develop a wiki. The students would develop that wiki and other students around the world can see the work of other students. The teacher can have a main blog which would contain questions or post for tips on doing the assignment etc.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

I would just like to add that there are those who are still afraid of using a computer so this may not apply to them. Those individuals are of the belief that if they touch the computer it would "spoil" or "mash up". There are those teachers who are also "Well seasoned" and don't need to " learn new tricks" because they are "on their way out" so they would not use the tech to the benefit of the student. Therefore the tech may not be easy for them to learn.

Blogs are organised in reverse chronological order so that the most recent posts show on the entry page, therefore allowing the most burning issues to be seen first.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

in a Blog it is written in reverse chronological order therefore the newest entry is always at the top

Side: For Blog or Wikki

using a blog only the blogger can edit his or her post there is also no automatic saving function of previous post versions

Side: For Blog or Wikki

a great point to note in a wiki is that the discussion/comment is separated from the wiki content

in a wiki the focus is the content produced not the individual authors

We also know that reflection is important to learning and blogs allow for personal reflection as compared to wikis.

Side: For Blog or Wikki

In closing for me both blogs and wikis share some common traits. These are:

1. They are both websites

2. They are both users - generated (the content of blogs and wikis is created by the actual user who is using the blogs and wikis

Blogs can also be peer-reviewed and commented on in the comments, whereas wikis allow people to change your work

KattyChris yes wiki people can change your work but that a good thing to see people different views and options.

But according to Lev Vygotsky in his Social Learning Theories he states:

Social learning theories help us to understand how people learn in social contexts (learn from each other) and informs us on how we, as teachers, construct active learning communities. So i think its a learning process.

In essence, Vygotsky recognizes that learning always occurs and cannot be separated from a social context. Consequently, instructional strategies that promote the distribution of expert knowledge where students collaboratively work together to conduct research, share their results, and perform or produce a final project, help to create a collaborative community of learners.

Side: Against Blog or Wikki

Both blogs and wikis allows users to comment on the content and most likely to be anonymous entries

What is a wiki?

I support blog and Wikis in the Classroom, since Blogs consist of “posts” followed by “comments.” Multiple posts often appear together, with the newest posts appearing at the top. For courses, blog posts can be structured using current lecture topics to extend classroom discussion. Students can make comments about posts or other comments, making the information more interactive. In addition to promoting discussion, blogs can also contain pictures and other multimedia, such as music or video. Blogs can appeal to students who learn by using an integrated, multi-media approach.

Brescia and Miller (2015) studied the advantages of instructional blogging. The pros from Brescia and Miller (2015) of blogging are: students feel more involved and in charge of their learning experiences; students have viable chances to participate in learning; and students have a chance to actively participate in learning outside of the classroom.

On the other hand, Wikis are websites that allow any user to modify a page. With wikis students can edit any information on the wiki, not just information they have posted. The Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) recently published an article on wikis and course management: http://jolt.merlot.org/vol4no2/frydenberg0608.htm. Researchers polled 145 students who used a wiki throughout a semester-long class. The study found that the wiki helped students work and learn more efficiently, and students felt it was easier to prepare for exams.

There is no stipulated number of blogs to write. A wiki can also be time-consuming and when someone makes changes to what you have already written in a wiki, you cannot change it.

I support you fully here Katty. This is really my main issue with Wikis. Once someone's work has been published it can easily be deleted by another malicious user. This needs to be guarded against. Blogs on the other hand facilitates the protection of one's work, as it cannot be modified but simply commented upon.

On the other hand KattyChris It’s important for faculty to budget time to provide adequate feedback. Spending more time reading and responding earlier in the semester seemed to help prevent problems later. Setting a deadline by which students must comment was very important to allow time to read and respond. Considered setting a word limit to make reading the students’ comments more manageable and to aid the students in learning to be more succinct in their writing.

Some of the disadvantages in blogging are that the public is able to look at your blog. This raises concerns for many people, especially for teachers and students in education.

Mr siewahnaresh some students actually think blogging is more casual than traditional formal writing, and their work maybe insignificant.

Side: Against Blog or Wikki

Since effective learning is now geared toward student-centered learning blogs would be more suitable for this approach. Blogs are AUTHOR centred & Wikis are CONTENT/DOCUMENT centred.

Side: Against Blog or Wikki

One of the problems with blogs is that it is usually opinion based rather than fact based. Wikis usually have peer assessment to verify if data is accurate whereas with the blog there is usually only one moderator and they would have potential biases. So in that case blogs have the potential to be biased where as the wiki may not be as prone to bias

Actually, the blogs and wikkis are not available to everyone, and most importantly every child is not provided internet. So, it makes a little difficult so they cannot be with other students and they will be lacking behind. My propose is live teaching is best than older matter saved in wikki. But blog is better than wikki coz it helps to keep update with the people.
