Service. For example, the uneducated are not necessarily knowledgable, and yet they are able capable of serving and helping others. Knowledge does not measure how good, compassionate, or empathic a person you are. You might argue that learning does not mean that they are smart, it could mean street-smart and practical-wise, but by helping others, others would help you, and that is what would support you through life. 5

To me, I feel that learning is a more important focus. Service without any learning value is meaningless. Having nothing learnt is equivalent to being forced to carry out the service without any sincerity in doing so. Although carrying out a service for others is important too, if nothing is learnt while carrying out the service, no matter how much effort is put in to the service, you might never improve on your next service to make it better. In addition to that, although doing a service for others is to provide assistance to them, another point of doing services for others is to put oneself in their shoes to feel for them. This is turn builds our character and when one has a good character, the recipients of the service will feel even better, thus justifying my point on why learning is more important than service. Just sayin. Learning is more important. Because in service learning, servicing is what everyone can do but whether he/she will learn from what they saw during service learning is different from everyone. If we learn, we can understand more about people and appreciate more about what i have. thank you welcome 5

I feel that both are important. Because with service comes learning, with learning comes service. As we serve others, we will learn along the way. But also, if we learn, only then the service will be good and beneficial. So when both are applied at the same time, then it will reach its full potential to be beneficial for both parties, the one doing service learning and the one receiving the help. Like wise, if they are separated, it would be meaningless as service will only be service and learning will only be learning, not being able to merge together to reach its full potential to help others. 5

The more important focus to me is Learning. Service is definitely important, however, if you just do a service without learning from it, then the service has no meaning. For example, you can visit an Old Folks' Home just for the sake of CCA points and this will be a service accomplished. However, if you do the service without learning anything, or taking anything away from the experience, the service basically has no meaning. You may not have to learn an important life lesson or value; perhaps something as simple as realizing that you are fortunate and should be grateful for everything you have can be a lesson well learnt. Thus, I feel that 'Learning' is the more important focus. 5

I think that both are equally as important as both rely on each other. When service is present, learnings comes after and in order to learn, service is required. When both are applied, benefits from both will be at its peak. When there is no service, learning is hard and shallow while when there is no learning, service loses its value. When one is absent, both will cease to work and thus backfire and fail. Therefore there is no point that outweighs the other as both are interlinked and interdependent on each other 4

Both are equally important. Providing the service for the recipients will help them improve or help their lives. Learning from the experience is also important such that after we do the service, we learn life lessons and how to improve the way we do a service in the future. However, if it is necessary to select a point, I feel that learning is more important. As it is said earlier, we learn life lessons and how to improve the way we do a service in the future. This experience will allow us to learn important life values (such as compassion, patience, etc.), and will allow us to mature into a better person in whole. We will also learn how to give better services in the future, so that the recipients will gain more benefits, and it would be smoother to run as well. 4

I think that 'Learning' is more important because after all that we should learn more about society and ourselves. We cannot change the world, therefore we should learn more to change ourselves which would in turn contribute to society. Also, by learning, we can perform our youth service programmes better by learning on our mistakes we make when we first start out with the youth service programmes. 4

Service learning has progressively become popular in schools in the modern era. Service learning, is a modern method that combines traditional classroom teaching with meaningful community service. However, what is the most important aspect? The act of kind and voluntary assistant from us volunteers, or the knowledge behind the act of assistance? I feel that the 'Service' should be more important focus in this meaningful activity. 'Service' is defined as an action of assistance, to help someone in need. Service is important, because this is what instills the values into us. However, learning is just accepting instructions with a dead mind. Service is actively contributing and thinking what you can do for the society and community around you - thinking for the common good. I think that service is what makes us have the mindset to do good for others. 'Service' is a psychological factor, and cannot be forced into one's mind. 4

l think both learning and service are important as for learning, it is the afterthoughts and reflections which influences the person to participate in another service program. In the case of service, the receiver end might not care if you learn anything or not, as long as you complete your job. 3

Another reason why learning is more important than service is due to the fact that a number of volunteers sometimes do not even understand the purpose of committing the service, but only for the rewards given. As such, it is not the will to drive them forward, but rather their greed. Following this attitude, the recipients of the service might not receive the best treatment from the service. Just sayin. Again. Hi. 1

Service is the most important focus, you can have a long list of degrees, and have studied everything there is to know about being a surgeon (example), but doesn't mean you can conduct a surgery. There are plenty of people that work their way from the bottom to the top. Those that have never taken a course in their lives, but with experience and time - can teach you more than any book can. Who do you think writes those books after all? Einstein dropped out of school, everyone called him dumb and said he wouldn't amount to anything - he sure did shove their words up their bean pole. But learning and service come hand and hand, you can't honestly have one without the other - with service you're learning as you progress. With learning, you're preparing for service. Otherwise - both would be useless without the other. |
