Which new innovation was the best at helping the Canadians secure victory at Vimy Ridge?

By early 1917, the First World War had been raging for two and a half years with no end in sight. On the Western Front, the Allies and the Germans had fought to a stalemate, with each side only being able to make small gains at a great cost in lives. Vimy Ridge was captured by the Germans in the early months of the war. A long, high hill that overlooked the surrounding plains, it was a key strategic position and the Allies wanted it back. Hundreds of thousands of British and French soldiers had become casualties in earlier attempts to recapture Vimy Ridge.

The Canadians and General Arthur Currie knew the challenge they faced and set out to make very detailed plans, preparations and introduced new innovation (technology) and methods  to maximize the chances of success.

New innovation included:
Research of Battle of the Somme failure, the Canadian Advantage, aerial photos, specialized platoons, mock area of Vimy Ridge, detailed maps to all soldiers, vimy Glide/creeping barrage, flash spotting/sound ranging, General Arthur Currie's motto "neglect nothing" or use of Tunnels.

Pick ONE innovation and defend your opinion with reasoning, evidence and facts.

There was many factors leading to the triumph of Vimy ridge against Germany, including the Vimy glide that was innovated by Arthur Currie also known as Chef Currie, it gave the Canadians a huge advantage over Germany because it was never done before, and the outside the box thinking made them an amazing military, some of those other ideas where flash spotting, sound range and tunnels that ultimately lead to the win over Germany. The Canadians practice of reading maps and practicing there timing for the Vimy glide was crushall as practice makes perfect and if they wanted to beat Germany at Vimy Ridge they nearly had to be perfect. The Vimy glide was a tactic that the Canadian military prefected advancing at a steady pace of 100 yards every three minutes, matching an artillery barrage that was set before them. Tunnels were dug to the front lines and allowed the Canadians to advance without the Germans seeing them.

The Canadian Advantage was the most helpful thing that the Canadians had. Giving people maps gave them a sense of pride to know that they were trusted with maps, times and place of enemy lines/trenches. It also played in to the fact that platoons were not made up of a bunch of rifle men anymore, they composed them specialists so if they got stranded in No Man's Land they had a much better chance of survival. The Last two reasons that the Canadian Advantage is the most important is the fact that no man was above the work, even the commanders had to work. You couldn't just buy your way into the army as a higher ranking officer to had to work your way up the ranks. This produced the best commanders that the country could offer.

The Vimy Glide or Creeping Barrage was the best new innovation created by the Canadians. I believe this to be true because without this new innovation the Germans would have been able to see the Canadians coming. When the Vimy Glide was preformed perfectly it allowed the Canadians to have the upper hand and surprise the German troops. Without this innovation the Canadians would have been defeated and would of had a greater casualties rate.

I think that the mock area of vimy Ridge is the most in-portioned because seeing something will beter equip you for the battle field. Think of it like this, say you play a sport, and you are going to play a another team you need to look over there plans and see what they are going to do. If you look at a football team. before a game you will see that one side of the ball dose what the other team will do and they can see best how to play agents that team. think of it like this practice makes perfect.

I think that one of the biggest innovations during the victory at Vimy Ridge would be the tunnel. I think the Tunnels had the biggest impact because the troops could move around no mans land unnoticed and safely. The soldiers could bring supplies up in the middle of no mans land to help the soldiers when they needed ammo or food in order to claim victory at Vimy Ridge. The Canadian troops set up the endings of tunnels close to the Germans trenches so that they could do a surprise attack on the Germans. I believe that without the tunnels the outcome of Vimy Ridge would have been different. Without the tunnels their attacks would have been different and they would not have been able to do surprise attacks on the German troops in their trenches. I think that a lot more lives would have been lost if not for the tunnels because the Canadian troops would not have the protection and safety as they did in the tunnels under no mans land. They would also use the tunnels to dig close to the enemy trenches and then place mines nearby. The mines would go off and would kill and injure the German troops. And that is why I think that the tunnels were one of the biggest reasons for the Canadians success during the victory at Vimy Ridge.

Aerial photos were the best innovation that the Canadians made, this allowed the soldiers to see where everything was positioned, such as artillery, German soldiers, and where the German trench ended and began. This also aided in which direction that the Canadians should send their soldiers to raid the trench. This helped the Canadians secure Vimy Ridge because the Germans had the upper hand of seeing everything, aerial photos were the same thing.

The most useful innovation that helped secure the victory at Vimy Ridge was tunnels. This was most useful tactic because it reduced the amounts of casualties. In previous wars the solders were looked at as a whole, instead of each individual. An example of how this improved the tactics from WW1 was in WW1 the soldiers were killed so quickly because they had to go over the top. Evidence was 60,000 casualties were lost in the trenches. It was nearly impossible to go over the top of the trenches without being shot. With the invention of tunnels, this allowed the soldiers to travel underground without being killed. The Germans were set up on top of a hill. This made it very easy to see the routes of the Canadians and where they were going.

I think that aerial photos was the best innovation in helping secure the Canadian Victory at Vimy Ridge because the maps that Canadians got helped them clearly understand their objectives and where they were supposed to go. They new where German artillery was located and knew where to go to avoid them. Aerial maps also helped out so Canadians knew where opposition trenches were as well.

One could argue that the Canadian advantage was the best factor at securing victory at Vimy Ridge.

One reason that the Canadian Advantage was a key factor in securing victory at Vimy Ridge is that the Canadians were used to hard work and no problem preforming physical tasks. This allowed the Canadian troops to carry heavier loads as well work longer than most British soldiers. They also didn't believe, unlike the British and the French, that they were above hard physical labor, which overall greatly improved the efficiency and attitude towards given tasks. The commanding officials and generals in the Canadian Military were also expected to work just as hard as the troops, for the Canadians had no class system where the higher raking officials were considered above everyone. The Canadians were also used to very cold winters so allowing the harsh weather in France to have a much less of a gripping effect on them than the British and French. All of these thing came together and allowed for a better atmosphere, harder working troops, and overall a better outcome in the success of the Canadians.

Another reason the Canadian Advantage was the best factor in securing victory at Vimy Ridge was that the officials and officers at the top in the military had their positions because they were best qualified for it. This allowed the Canadian Military to be led by individuals who knew what they were doing, unlike in European militaries where officers were able to buy their way into having their position. The Canadian Officers and Officials had to work their way up and be the best suited and qualified for the job. This ensured that the troops would not be led by ignorant wealthy induviduals who had no idea what they were doing or how to fight in the war. This overall made the structure of the military and how the battles were fought more effective. The commanders new what they were doing and tried to fight battles without having large numbers of casualties.

One new innovation of the battle of Vimy Ridge was the use of maps. When the Canadians were trying to take over Vimy Ridge they gave maps out to all of these solvers, this was a huge advantage over the germans. Allowing all of the soldiers to see the outline of the battle field gave them confidence and the soldiers gave more trust to the generals. The maps also help spot out German artillery. One reason why I think that the use of maps was a important factor for the Canadians to secure victory at vimy ridge was, in past wars the soldiers were always throw blindly into a battlefield. When the soldiers were given maps it allowed them so scout out the best way for them to succeed, also it gave them a sense of secretary.

The use of the tunneling system assisted the success in the capture of Vimy Ridge. Vimy ridge was ridge that stretched up to 8 km long from the base of the ridge to the crest. The Germans had fortified themselves strongly at the crest of the ridge, thus making it easy to view attackers and defend against. Tunnels made Vimy ridge a possible success because of the following contributing outcomes, such as the available outcome to move goods, machines, troops and other necessary materials underground. The tunnels offered protection from the prying eyes of the Germans. Due to the Germans heavy fortifications, a successful attack would need to prove as a surprise. The tunnels offered this advantage. The tunnels were engineered by professionals, thus making them as safe as possible given the circumstances. The tunnels dug allowed equipment and people to be transported swiftly, with less risk of destruction from the opposition army, and without the knowledge of the Germans.

The entire network of tunnels contributed to the capture of Vimy ridge because, aside from move large numbers of troops and supplies though main tunnels, there were also several connecting network tunnels, some dug into the land and filled with explosives, which were then blown up to damage enemy trenches or cast craters into no-mans land. ( this could also lead less confidence in crossing no mans land; not knowing what is beneath you.)

The tunnels also were able to sneak troops up to enemy lines during siege, due to them being dug, and then broken through to the above ground for the zero hour. This allowed surprise to fall on the Germans, and better transportation for supplies and the wounded. Infantry assault suffered far less casualties because of the use of the tunneling system. The underground tunnel network in turn, overall contributed to the victory of the Germans over of Vimy ridge.

I thought it was Canadian bacon. Remember: an army marches on its stomach. With bacon, they were in "hog" heaven. Pun intended.

Arthur Currie had many procedures and implementations in creating a successfully victory for Canada like creating a recreating of Vimey ridge, rehearsing battle plans; counting steps in a given time to practice the vimey glide, and giving individual soldiers maps which illiventaleed the heirarcieal system that implied that the gerneal was the only one that reads the maps because soliders were seen as despencable tools that can be sent where the general points which creates a dependancy and need for order to accomplish tasks where as the Canadian advantage supplied different fundentmentals obtained by living in canada that did away with currency and hhierach sceme and saw everyone as equal, and that if that the goal was to be reached they would have to act as a self sufinect teams that were able to accomplish tasks for the greater good without being structured by a general and had there own knowledge like being able to read a map to supply a sufficient battle strategy that was manipulatable by the solider be cause he understands the strategy this put the power in the soldiers hands letting the self interest of the army take over.

The key innovations from the battle at Vimy ridge did not come from physical new technologies, but re purposing of old ones. This included the Vimy glide, arguably the most effective tactic during the battle. This was the use of a military barrage to cover the Canadian advance. The barrage was timed with the infantry to provide cover as well as inflict damage on the German line. The tactic levelled the German front destroying machine gun nests and small gun and mortar emplacements. The barrage covered the Canadian troops from German snipers and sharpshooters. In short the British artillery barrage was one of the deciding factors that determined the Canadian victory.

the way they trained everyone to take out the enemy and how they didnt just tell them to go out and fight they actually made them specialize in one way of war so they each had different platoons. they could make the plan go by faster and make everyone self sufficient

A new innovation that I think helped the Canadians secure victory at Vimy Ridge was specialized platoons because in each platoon there was a person with a certain skill which made the platoons flexible. In what every situation the platoons had to accommodate for they could. Platoons also split up your army so you could ultimately cover more ground and take out more threats. If in a situation one platoon had to cover fire and another platoon had to approach they could accommodate or switch what they need to do at any time. Specialized platoons also kept things running smoothly and in an organized manner. Platoons were also made up of a smaller amount of men then an army was so they could get around easier and not be seen as easily. Every soldier in a platoon had a special talent or skill making the platoons unique, this gave every platoon a different strength. A specialized platoon made them self sufficient.

the way the used tunnels helped the Canadians out strongly because instated of having 100 or more soldiers running across no mans land with 70lbs of equipment and they could get shot so what they did is build tunnels under ground and set up railroad tracks that could take the equipment for them
