Who can give consent for sex?

I am being accused of supporting rape because I am in favor of lowering the legal age of marital consent in America.  So I ask the debate community to use their weight of majority opinion to try me and determine if I am guilty or not guilty of this accusation.

So, who can give consent for sex?

Is there some morally absolute age that all humanity understands as what defines who is and is not appropriate to consent to sex?  If so, what is this age? (all parties must be in agreement, otherwise it's not an absolute)

Or does the age for consent rely entirely upon whatever the laws of the country/state/territory you live in state is the age of consent?

If the age of consent laws are what defines consent, I am wholly innocent.

If there is a morally absolute age at which consent is permissible by natural virtue, please define it, as depending upon what that age is, I may or may not be guilty.

I think that if a person is mature and smart enough to understand the cause and effects of sexual intercourse, why can't they have sex? Heck look at me, I'm fourteen and I have better grammar and understanding of strong subjects than some people on this site.

I guess it comes down to knowing when a person is ready to have sexual intercourse. It is impossible to have a set age limit because people's minds develop on their own pace, just as their bodies. I think that it is up to the two parties engaging in sexual activity to decide if and when a person should be doing what they are doing, not someone else.

The laws are put in to more or less make sure that both parties are fully aware of what they are doing, that's it (as it is assumed that people's minds have fully developed enough by this age).

I completely agree with your sentiments here. Though I would say "knowledgeable" as opposed to "smart" about the cause and effects of sex.

Now, why are we hostiles?

Anyone can but if you want it to be legal, you need that slip of paper, or that government signature. Sorry 18 year old men with 17 year old girlfriends, can't touch that.
