Who should I vote for in the 2008 Florida 8th District House of Representatives Race?

Alan Grayson (D)

VS.

Ric Keller (R)

Alan Grayson not only supports ending the war in Iraq, through his efforts as a private citizen, he's done something about it. His efforts to punish war profiteers through our court system has been successful and completely ignored by Bush's rubber stamp, Ric Keller. The amount of unchecked abuse by these profiteers, in cases the DOJ declined to try, is appalling. I want somebody to represent me who cares how my tax money is spent, and that person, for the last eight years, has NOT been Ric Keller. Alan Grayson has demonstrated a responsible attitude towards stewardship of our money, and he will do a better job than Keller in Congress.

Alan Grayson - as a citizen - has done and continues to do what our paid congressman, Ric Keller, should have been doing for the last 8 years...prosecute war profiteers! If the people want accountability and a person that will work to do what is right for America, Alan Grayson is your man. Republicans...rather than insist on lower taxes, how about "hiring" someone who will watch over our tax money and insure it is spent appropriately! The millions Alan has "retrieved" can fund infrastructure improvements, make a dent on universal health care for all or provide funding for the GI Bill!

$23 billion went to war profiteers linked to the Bush administration such as Scott Custer and Mike Battles over the past four years, and such abuse has not gone unnoticed by progressive candidates such as Grayson.

The BBC did a story on Iraq war profiteers like Battles who received government contracts without sufficient experience in organized military trade, and Grayson was one of their star interviewees.

They [Custer, Battles et al.] had been given a contract to spend anything they wanted, buy anything they want, they'd be able to mark that up 25%. But that wasn't good enough for them. They were too greedy.

Grayson vows to bring war profiteers and charlatans in Washington to justice. His principle care is making certain that troops abroad get the materials they need to successfully complete missions so that the US can end it's occupation and federal programs can get back on their feet.

No Child Left Behind, says Grayson, did little more than make American children into cogs in a machine and give Republicans a way to send millions of dollars overseas to support unnecessary and inefficient suppliers in Iraq instead of dedicating them to the education of America's children.

Outsourcing jobs to India and China only increases competition here in the midst of a weakened economy. Grayson says that children in the states need to be given the proper tools and funding to reach their full potential and that includes providing the technological assets necessary to comprehend a digital world.

If elected, Grayson hopes to:

-ensure that schools are given more resources

-fully fund any federal education requirements, such as No Child Left Behind

-increase federal funding for electives, including art, music, and drama

-promote stronger math and science education

-increase funding for early education programs

-increase funding for college financial aid programs

-support pay increases and training for teachers, especially for those who teach in the neediest areas

Health care in America is in serious need of an overhaul and Grayson is prepared to make the necessary changes in Congress to insure that Americans no longer remain "one accident away from financial ruin."

Says Grayson: "My Democratic opponent wants to keep the status quo. What kind of country are we that we deny care to the neediest among us, especially children? This is not only a financial issue, but a moral issue. You should have the right to quality, affordable health care for you and your family, to see the doctor of your choice, and to get the care you need, when you need it."

Over 47 million Americans are currently uninsured including 8 million children. Grayson is tired of seeing Congress's hard work overturned by Bush's bad policies and longs to make secure health care for working Americans a reality.

"American know-how has been stopped because the oil companies have controlled innovation in [the field of energy]. They are not interested in innovating."

The United States is currently the only country in the world that has yet to sign the Kyoto Protocol which outlines an international agreement in cooperation the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Grayson finds that fact to be shameful.

He proposes that Americans take back that right to knowledge that we have been denied over the past ten years and force Congress to give the people a realistic renewable energy policy that will provide a national standard of 15% by the year 2020.

As a long time member of the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, The Nature Conservancy, The National Wildlife Foundation and The National Geographic Society, Grayson is personally invested in finding a healthy alternative to damaging drilling and dwindling petroleum reserves.

According to the CBO, twenty years ago, senior citizens were receiving social security checks equal to over 50% of their pay before retiring. Now, senior citizens get 40%. Who knows what will happen after the baby boomer generation?

It's an illusion, says Grayson, there's money aplenty in the social security coffers, Americans just don't push for it. Social Security is adjusted based on inflation, but since wages have been rising faster than inflation, social security hasn't caught up to wages earned yet. Grayson says that there are more than $2 trillion in the social security fund, more than enough for our current senior citizens. The threshold amount for SS of $34,000 has never been adjusted for inflation, and Grayson feels it's high time that Congress look into it.

Also, Medicare doesn't cover many basic necessities for the elderly, such as hearing aids, glasses, eye exams, dental, and the cost of hospital stays. Grayson believes that it's time Washington make some overdue updates to help the senior citizens who gave their youth to the construction of our nation.

Wow no one has stepped up to support 4 term Congressman Ric Keller? Are you people crazy? This man is a paragon of value and exactly the kind of leader we deserve. I remember when he ran for office the first time, showing all of us in Central Florida what a great family man he was, how he believes in the traditional values that make America what it is. Never mind that he left his wife in a cold hearted manner soon after winning to date an assistant. These things happen

In Washington Ric has fought hard for our area too. He has ensured our rights to eat at fast food restaurants everywhere without fear by sponsoring the McDonald's protection act. As a fat man, I can't tell you how happy that makes me. Thanks for looking out for a brother Ric. Us chubby guys need to stick together. Sure, McDonald's and Darden didn't pay me the way they did you to support that bill, but I'm with you man. What a great way to step up for our area.

Ric has done many other great things. He supported the war. He has voted to keep our taxes low by voting against homeless vets from the war. Hey if they want a place to stay - reenlist is my motto. He has made a career out of scaring us err educating us about the risks of Internet predators (I have received no less than 3 phone calls to join Mr. Keller to talk about this vital subject) event though the actual stats show it is a pretty uncommon crime compared to the rampant crime in many of District 8s neighborhoods. Bravo Ric, why fool around with mundane real crime when you can be grab the headlines with the perverted kind. I like the cut of your jib sir! If you focused on real crime in our nations cities and policies to prevent them, I'd think you were soft. America deserves spectacle not solution from it's leaders which is why you are so well qualified to serve the home of Disney World.

But Ric, lest you think I love you just for your stellar voting record that includes voting against equal pay for women, against helping working class families in our area keep their homes and for Big Oil; it's not just that. No Ric, it's that you my friend are a man of your word. When you make a promise we can take it to the bank. Sallie Mae or Freddie Mac that is. Like when you said you would only run 4 terms you meant it. Then. Now...well hey why should we quibble about little things like that. The point is that YOU sir do your party proud. I even heard somewhere you might be the poster boy for this election.

How can you not love this man?

In his time in office, Ric has done a great job representing Florida in the House and fighting to lower taxes for Americans.

Ric voted "no" to raising taxes by over $600B and instead supported an alternative budget that contains no tax increases, repeals the Alternative Minimum Tax, and imposes a moratorium on earmarks. Congressman Keller has voted to lower the marginal and capital gains rates, kill the death tax, end the unfair marriage penalty, and extend the child tax credit.

Ric has also focused his efforts in Washington on curbing wasteful spending, like closing a loophole that allowed convicted child predators to receive federal financial aid to take college courses. In some instances, sex offenders were putting their financial aid towards buying blue jeans and DVDs while they were behind bars. It's no wonder Ric has been named a "Taxpayer Hero" by the Citizens Against Government Waste. - Ric Keller's website

Well sure he votes against taxes at every term. That's not saying much, he IS a Republican. Even when the taxes could have been used to help people in his district he votes no. When the deficit is at record levels he votes no. When we are at a point in our history where our economy teeters because of our huge debt and the increased reluctance of Foreign lenders (China anyone) to continue to bankroll our excess he votes no. Having Rick Keller vote AGAINST 600B in taxes isn't a shock. It also isn't something to be lauded.

But with all the waste in Washington, like Governor Palin's Bridge to Nowhere, Rics big "waste cutting effort" is closing a LOOPHOLE for child sex predators to get financial aid for college. WOW What a staggering amount of money that saved the government. Let's see, Mr Grayson has, as a private citizen, brought millions upon millions of dollars back to tax payers over the years from fraudulent contractors (all a matter of public record) but Ric Keller, in his 8 years on the job, on HIS website decides the ONE thing he can list as his "wasteful spending campaign" is keeping sexual predators from the Pell Grant.

No wonder I LOVE this guy. Oh my god, people please please vote for Ric. I might be able to retire soon from writing about the life and times of ineffective politicians if you do.

Next up? Anyone? Anyone?

It seems that incumbent Republican Ric Keller is a little weak in knees coming into the last stretch to November as he only narrowly defeated Todd Long, a radio talk show host, by a 6 point margin (53% to 47%) in the primary last month.

It's also not a good sign for the Keller people to know that the Democratic Party is putting their chips in that Keller's going to buckle and they're pouring in a hefty amount of funding into Grayson's (D) campaign on top of the money we both know the Democratic challenger (who put $1 million plus into his primary campaign) is ready and able to dip into on his own.

This race is already gaining traction in the media as it is one of the contests that will likely succeed in changing from red to blue. As such, expect to see Grayson pick up an aggressive offense against Keller who may be playing defense all the way to November like a few of his fellow endangered Republicans across the country.

Congressman Keller voted against both versions of the Wall Street bailout bill (see here and here) like many congressional Republicans, which will probably help them retain more seats. That doesn't necessarily make Keller or most others trustworthy, and the Democrats supported the bill in higher numbers, so they will all need to be kept in check if they don't operate on the principle of following the Constitution.
