The vast majority of American's believe the economy is on the wrong path, and this should help Linda Stender(D) in her bid for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District's House seat against Leonard Lance(R). Stender is making good use of the high gas prices, low retail sales, and foreclosure issues facing her constituents in New Jersey. She is utilizing the economic downturn as an effect of Republican failings over the past 8 years, linking Lance to the President's failed policies and Big Oil. Stender should benefit heavily from the Democratic strength in 2008.

A Federal Election Commission report showed that State Senator Leonard Lance, candidate for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, was having financial troubles with his campaign. With just $81,000 cash on hand, Lance loaned his campaign $100,000. In addition, it appears his campaign is $190,000 in debt. His opponent, Democrat Linda Stender had $1.2 million cash on hand.

Elections are won with money, and without a steady stream of finances, Lance's bid for the Congressional seat is in danger.

I can't help but wonder whether the inability of many Dems to raise money despite Obama's gusher of contributions is indicative of short coattails? Does it mean that all the college kids sending him their beer money, the tweens with their lemonade stands to raise Obamadollars really are the non force they always have been come election day? The press has covered Obama's dollar overflow but rarely points out that the amount of money the RNC has out raised the DNC by more than makes up for all of those rolled pennies Obama has collected.

New Jersey's 7th Congressional District's Democratic candidate Linda Stender's stance on the Iraq war remains unwavered following President Bush's orders to remove troops stationed in country to return to pre-Surge levels. The Administration says this is proof that the Surge worked.

Stender policy shows her belief that the war has cost too many lives, too much money, and has harmed America's reputation. She says she supports the troops and believes they have performed their duty, but the time for pullout has come. Stender points out that America's infrastructure is in disarray and we badly need the $10 billion a month we are spending in Iraq here at home.

In 2006, Linda Stender and fellow Assemblywoman Joan Quigley jointly released a statement calling on New Jersey retailers to boycott the sale of Ann Coulter's “Godless: The Church of Liberalism.” The call for the boycott was in response to Coulter's criticism of four widows of 9/11 who questioned U.S. and intelligence agency actions leading to the terror attacks. Coulter stated that the women enjoyed the fame and financial rewards of their husbands deaths.

Some fired back saying the boycott amounts to censorship, however, Stender believes a voluntary boycott is justifiable.

In a recent ad from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, New Jersey State Senator Leonard Lance is portrayed in cartoon form, dancing across the state, getting money from special interests and denying the citizens of his state any funds.

The ad points out the $32,000 in donations, Lance received from the oil and natural gas industry. It showcases his record of voting against property tax relief for the state's residents in 2004, while in the same year voting to raise the Senate's salary by 40%.

The ad's effectiveness is unknown, however the denigrating fact that they portray the gray haired Lance in a style not unlike Mr. Magoo, may resonate with voters as the Senator being out of touch with the constituency.

State Senator Leonard Lance had a bitter fight in the Republican primary contest to secure the nomination to he Congressional seat of New Jersey's 7th District. His main opponent was Kate Whitman, daughter of former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman. He also faced off against former Hillsborough Councilman Chris Venis, Warren Mayor Vic Sordillo, Bridgewater Councilman Michael Hsing, Seton Hall Prof. A.D. Amar, and Watchung attorney Tom Roughneen. In a crowded field of Republicans, Lance secured only 40% of the vote to find himself the nominee.

The Republican Party of the 7th seems to be fairly split on who they supported and ended up with Lance as a candidate.

In 2006, Linda Stender(D) ran for the seat in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District against incumbent Mike Ferguson(R). During the campaign, Ferguson ran ads featuring the catchphrase “Linda Stender is a Spender.” This ad reverberated through the electorate, portraying Stender as a tax-and-spend liberal, causing her to loose the election.

In a recent poll of 300 potential voters, 15% of the respondents called her a big spender when asked why they viewed her unfavorably. Two years later, the effects of the 2006 campaign still resonate with voters in New Jersey, causing harm to Stender's campaign against Leonard Lance(R).

Republican Leonard Lance has launched an ad portraying his opponent Democrat Linda Stender as a big spender. Stender faced this problem before, two years ago in her bid for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District's House seat against Mike Ferguson.

This time, Lance has launched an add that shows various New Jersans stating that she is still a big spender and also a big taxer. Capitalizing on her name problems and the traditional tax and spend liberalism, Lance's attack is piercing, particularly the fact that Stender has voted to raise taxes a monumental 67 times.

Senator Leonard Lance has unveiled a plan he calls the Bonds on the Ballot Initiative. With New Jersey suffering from a record level of debt, Lance believes that the time has come to allow a more direct democratic approach to state spending. He has proposed to let the voters decide on the ballot if they approve of putting New Jersey into further debt.

There is an initiative on the ballot this November that will authorize voters going forward all responsibility in approving debt. This initiative has had supporters and detractors on both sides of the aisle. As it removes the responsibility of debt from the legislators and puts it in the hands of the people. It also removes the ability of New Jersey's elected representatives to make hard financial decisions. This issue again raises the argument of majority versus minority, however Lance believes that this will help his bid for election to New Jersey's 7th Congressional District.
