Energy is a major issue on the minds of voter's nationwide, and New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District is no different. Democratic candidate Martin Heinrich claims he has a more progressive energy policy than his opponent Republican Darren White.

Heinrich's 8 point plan to gain energy independence is backed by his history of environmentalism. He has served as Executive Director of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, giving young people environmental education, and was appointed to head the Office of the Natural Resources Trustee. With the Albuquerque City Council, he fought for energy efficiency and environmentalism. While White tows the GOP talking points on weening off of foreign oil, Heinrich's fundamental values will serve him will this November.

Republican candidate for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District's House seat, Sheriff Darren White, has come under scrutiny for his stance on decriminalization of drugs. According to his website, White resigned from the post of Secretary of Public Safety when Governer Gary Johnson began advocating decriminalization. Johnson called the “War on Drugs” a failure and that the nation needed a new way to deal with the matter.

However, White is quoted in a 1999 article in Razor Wire as saying, "We're not going to arrest ourselves out of this drug problem. The governor is absolutely right. We should be looking at other options because our current policy is failing." He was complaining about the $6 million spent by New Mexico and the $17 billion on the Federal level with only a 5-15% effectiveness in drug seizures.

Being attractive is not a requirement for political office, but one would be questioned if they thought it didn't matter. Albuquerque Council President Martin Heinrich was voted “hottest man in U.S. politics by an online poll conducted on Politics1.com.

Garnering 19.6% of the vote, the Democratic candidate beat out fellow party members City Council candidate Sam Brooks and Congressional candidate Scott Kleeb for the coveted position.

Although “hottness” is not usually on voters minds on election day, the fact that Heinrich is deemed an attractive man may play well for him in November.

In these times of economic, environmental, and international upheaval, we need members of the house who will be able to work with all parties to effect real change. Martin Heinrich is for an energy independence that doesn't give large tax breaks to the oil companies; health care reform that doesn't reward insurance companies who act on what seems to be pure avarice; and he wants to bring our troops home from Iraq with honor without de-stabilizing the region. No doubt that, and many other reasons, are why the Albuquerque Journal endorsed him, along with the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, and many, many others. Here's some of what the Journal has to say about Heinrich: "Martin Heinrich established a record of putting one foot in front of the other to build consensus on the often contentious Albuquerque City Council. His liberal leanings are clear, but so is the pragmatism and respect for other points of view that endow Heinrich with the ability to listen, accommodate and move difficult initiatives forward. That would be a welcome talent in Congress."

While being endorsed by many unions, including many of the teachers unions and trades unions, the Democratic Congressional Candidate for New Mexico’s 1st District Martin Heinrich still exudes many his stance for the working class.

Mr. Heinrich was advocating for a long time to push New Mexico’s minimum wage to $7.50, which barely covers the cost of living presently, but as Mr. Heinrich states, “I will push for a higher national minimum wage adjusted annually for inflation…”

The Democratic Congressional candidate believes in ending the war in Iraq however, he continues to call it Bush and Cheney’s war when it was in fact both the Democrats and Republicans who voted to give the authorization to put United States forces in Iraq.

Again, as I consistently state, this Congressional candidate, like so many others, do not state specifically how they are going to accomplish certain aspects of their goals. Mr. Heinrich is no different, although he deserves accolades for what he wants to accomplish, but a clear concise plan is what needs to be in order.

Democratic candidate for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, Martin Heinrich, has positioned himself as a “new and better” Democrat for change in this country. Using the story of his grandparents' flee from Nazi-Germany he focuses in on what he refers to as American fascism.

Pointing out the bipartisan effort to pass the Patriot Act, with 129 Democrats joining Republican ranks, and warrantless wiretapping of citizens, Heinrich hopes to convince voters he's a Democrat that won't side with the GOP and their interests no matter the political consequences.

After Heather Wilson lost her bid for the Republican nomination for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, Darren White was able to consolidate his power and make Terrorism a prime issue in the election. White's 20 year history of serving in law enforcement gives him an edge over his rival, Democratic candidate Martin Heinrich.

White served in the 82nd Airborne in the US Army before becoming a police officer. He eventually became New Mexico's Secretary of Public Safety and followed with his election to sheriff of Bernalillo County. The platform of “Keeping America Safe” stands firmly as one of the major issues of this election.

Even as President Bush was campaigning to raise $317,000 in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, Sheriff Darren White distanced himself from the President and his policies. In his bid for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District's House seat, White wants to image himself as a Washington outsider who doesn't support the present administration despite having served as the President's 2004 Bernalillo County campaign chair. White added with a statement, “My campaign is about shaking up Washington with strong, independent leadership and I look forward to earning the support of the voters."

Republican Congressional Candidate for New Mexico’s 1st District Darren White seems to be an average man of the people and maybe that is what is attractive about him to voters in New Mexico. Let’s not forget, this is how George W. Bush was elected in the year 2000 by being the average person that you “want to have a beer with.”

Mr. White is the average moderate Republican right now that believes the United States should continue its current foreign policy of pre-emptive war, continuing the war in Iraq and expanding the war on Terrorism.

When it comes to taxes, Mr. White creates a detailed 10-point plan on how he plans to go forth with his proposals:

1) Create the “Simple Return” to shift the burden of preparing tax returns to the IRS.

Streamline the process for filing taxes by giving taxpayers the option of verifying pre-filled tax forms based on information the IRS has already collected from banks and employers. This will allow nearly 40% of Americans to complete their tax returns in 5 minutes. It will save $2 billion in tax preparation fees and countless hours of aggravation.

2) Increase the per child tax credit from $1000 to $1250.

In these tough economic times, we’re all struggling. But families are hit especially hard, as they are paying more for gas and groceries. For example, food prices rose 4% last year compared to 2.5% the year before. It is anticipated that the increase will be 4.5 % this year. That’s why increasing the per-child tax credit from $1,000 to $1,250 makes so much sense and why Darren White supports it.

3) Provide every American a tax benefit who purchases their own health insurance, and offer small businesses tax credits if they offer health benefits to employees.

It is unacceptable that we have 44 million uninsured Americans, many of them children. In 2005, we spent $2 trillion on health care, which is 16 percent of the GDP and $6,697 per person. In 1970, total health care spending was $75 billion, or only about $356 per person. Increasing health care costs are a major financial burden to families. Tax incentives that lead to more Americans being covered with health insurance easily pay for themselves in cost savings.

4) Make permanent the Internet tax moratorium.

In a global economy, the Internet is critical to our competitiveness. That’s why it’s so important that we not stifle economic growth online by imposing new taxes. White strongly support making permanent the Internet tax moratorium.

5) Cut Business Tax rate from the current rate of 35% to 25%.

This tax rate is the 2nd highest in the world and forcing jobs overseas.

We are in a global economy. As our trade partners lower their tax rates, it becomes easier to create jobs overseas than it does in America. We need to lower our business tax rate to help stop the flow of American jobs going overseas.

6) Eliminate the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) on the middle class.

The AMT was originally intended to target 155 high-income earners in 1970. Today, it hits 25 million middle-class families. Permanently eliminating this tax would save the average family $2,700 per year in taxes.

7) Make permanent and strengthen the Research and Development Tax Credit

Make permanent the Research and Development tax credit. It will stimulate short-term business investment and create long-term benefits to our economy in New Mexico. Making the credit permanent will allow businesses to make long-term research planning decisions. In fact, among nations with a tax incentive for R&D;, the United States now provides one of the weakest incentives, below our neighbors Canada and Mexico, and behind many Asian and European nations.

8) Oppose 50-cent a gallon gas tax proposal in Washington.

A 50-cent increase per gallon federal gas tax hike has been proposed by Energy & Commerce Chairman John Dingell. Potentially tripling our gas tax and further driving up the cost that consumers pay at the pump is wholly irresponsible, and in Congress, White will fight fervently against tax increases like this, which hits working New Mexicans the hardest.

9) Require a 3/5ths majority in Congress to raise taxes.

Higher taxes kill jobs and hurts families. That’s why we need to make it more difficult for politicians to take our money. It currently takes a 3/5ths majority in the US Senate to move legislation. It should be just as hard to raise taxes and that’s why White supports requiring a 3/5ths majority in Congress to tax hikes.

10) Block the largest tax increase in history on working families and small business: 683 Billion Dollars

With our economy struggling, the last thing we needs is Washington to take more of our money to feed their wasteful spending. The current plan in Congress will raise taxes by 683 billion dollars, or $2,345 for the average family in New Mexico. Now more than ever, we should do everything we can to help working families make ends meet, by allowing them to keep more of their hard earned money. This reckless tax hike will cost thousands of jobs and stifle growth.
