Yeah, the Confederacy got the short end of the stick. The states had a right to secede if they wanted to. Lincoln used slavery as a casus belli to take over the south. And if the south had won, slavery would have been gone away anyway. The CSA would start trading with Britain, France, and Europe. All of them banned slavery. They would have eventually forced the confederates to abandon slavery, and we would have had two American countries. A good book series about this kind of scenario is by the author Harry Turtledove. Check it out! Side: Confederacy
Not to mention that many prominent confederate figures like Jefferson Davis and Robert E Lee saw slavery as a nessisary evil that would disappear as soon as it ceased to be essential. And believed in treating there slaves like family as did many other slave holding southerners which where the minority of southerners by the way. Side: Confederacy

I voted this side because I have always believed the South got a bum deal, sure a lot of them supported slavery but that was only a small part of the actual conflict their main reason for going to war was for independance as they felt they were not adequately supported in Washington. As has already been mentioned only a minority of Confederate Soldiers owned Slaves and there were also free Blacks many ex slaves that fought alongside Whites, strangely the North who have always been portrayed as the non racist good guys were in favour of segregation, in their army Blacks and Whites were not allowed in the same regiment. Also once the Northern army freed Slaves they then expected them to work longer hours in worse conditions, i'd rather be a slave than have that kind of freedom. So in my book there was good and bad on both sides but the North have always seemed a bit hypocritical and the South has been unfairly vilified. Side: Confederacy
I never said owning Slaves was a good thing and I dont know how often i'm going to have to explain this to you people, there were people on both sides of this war who supported slavery, many Blacks were not freed by the North but kept as Slaves to manafacture Cotton to keep the Northern War Drive going and Ulysses S Grant would have switched sides rather than free the Slaves. Anyone who can only see the Civil War as being a war fought over slavery alone is an idiot and needs to check their history Rolls eyes, scratches arse. Side: Confederacy

Pretty sure that sarcasm is being used, but for two hundred years, the federal government embraced policies that supported slavery and Jim Crow. Laws Supporting Slavery So, it should be clear that it was not the fault of individuals or private citizens, it was the government. Side: Confederacy

The Union and the Confederates problem was their radically different economic systems. South had a nice slave labor industry based economy. The north was based on industry and individual work were workers got paid. Slavery was still played a massive role in the war as it stimulated both the economic arguments and the argument for states rights. Lincoln played this game well. He couldn't offend the confederacy and he knew that their succession was correctly done. By law they technically were still apart of the union. He was able to execute more executive power because technically the south was just in rebellion. The union didn't acknowledge the south nice structure in their economy. The south pretty much relied on slave labor so to them Abraham Lincoln was a great terror to the south. Lincoln had to figure out a way to liberate the slaves and somehow gain half the country back also. Lincoln stated a quote that said he knew that the suprene race would be the whites and if he could bring the confederacy back without emancipation then he would. This was done in hopes that war could be avoided and return the union back into one faction. By then war was inevitable so war would decide the fate of the south. The south actually got more kills but their economy crumbled and inflation rose to a rediculous percentage. Emancipation was enacted and they lost that labor force. Lincoln was just so conflicted with this war our perception of him changes either for better or worse. Side: Union
