In a "fist fight only", that would mean neither of them get to use their power-ups. That's bad for Mario because he can't do much besides jump without his weapons/power-ups. Sonic, on the other hand has taken on foes like Knuckles, Shadow, Metal Sonic, Robotnik's robots, Silver and others without his power-ups before and has still won many times (and if not "won", then still done pretty darn good).

Yes, Mario is much, much physically stronger than Sonic but a combination of speed and brain beats brawn anyday!
