Why are atheists ok with abortion but not with their version of murder

First, lack of beliefs in Gods doesn't tel you whether someone supports abortians or not. Some atheists don't support abortion, some Christians do. Second, by definition it isn't murder if abortion is legal in the locality it is performed. Murder isn't just killing, it is killing illegally. Anyway, people who support abortion do so for their own reasons. Many believe it isn't proper life yet, and should not be considered so until birth or at least a significant amount of development kicks in. Others argue that until it is fully separated from the mother it is a part of her body, and her decision to do as she pleases. 1

This is an unfounded statement directly attacking atheists and abortion. Not every atheist is an advocate of abortion. As an atheist that is an advocate of abortion my reasoning for why murder is not okay but abortion is okay is this. A woman who has been living for at least nine years, is more deserving of not altering her life as drastically as having a baby would, than a fetus that has never even taken a first breath is deserving of taking that breath. As an example if that was confusing to some, I would sooner save a living woman from a burning building than I would save a lump of cells destined to become a person. 1

Not all atheists are okay with abortion. Plenty consider themselves secular humanists and are against abortion precisely for the reasons Christians are against it. Atheists, or anyone who is in favor of abortion, likely doesn't believe life starts at conception, hence they don't consider it murder because there is no life actually being taken. It really depends who you're talking to. Everyone has a slightly different view on this sensitive subject. 1
