Why aren't terrorist attacks more common?

Government organisations go to increasing lengths to limit our freedoms under the guise of national security. It seems to me though that if someone really wanted to commit a terrorist act it would be a very easy thing to do and not something anyone could prevent. Why aren't their more terrorists walking into nurseries and opening fire? Grating beans to make resin and throwing the powder in the air on the underground? Making homemade bombs? It just doesn't make sense that there is such a big threat but yet so free attacks when it is so easy.

While national security agencies certainly play a role, the main reason is probably the rarity of violent extremists who wish to terrorize other sovereign states.

Sensationalism makes it seem like they are everywhere, but most people are just like you. They want to live. They need food and shelter and probably a little bit of happiness.

Since we are not privy to the details of government agencies working to thwart terrorist attacks, it seems quite unlikely that we are in a position to answer this question.

So with the lack of evidence you just assume that the government in thwarting all the terrorist attacks and that is why it isn't more common? Seems more probable to me that terrorism isn't as much a problem as they want us to think.

Actually, the US government does release reports on number of terrorist plots thwarted to gauge effectiveness of programs. There is such a thing as oversight, even if it is woefully inadequate.
