Why do some people get so pissed off when people speak other languages?
You know what people I'm talking about

It's generally the type who colour themselves superior to others, and then feel inferior because they can't understand. (Excuse the Swedish, I'm a terrible speller and American keyboards aren't equipped with the three extra letters.) Y me encanta que yo puedo hablar espanol. Side: Inferiority

People get pissed when they can't understand something at all. This is the same concept in anything- even math! I always get pissed when I can't figure out something for homework or in class and I distinctly remember that one debate where everyone was speaking German and I was really angry because I had no idea what they were talking about. >.< Side: Inferiority
It's not really nice to create a debate just to insult one person. Just my two cents there. :/ However, to answer the question, I think there are at least 3 main reasons: 1. Snobbishness(Known to its fans as nationalism). The idea that America is the greatest, most benevolent country on the planet, and that everyone should bow to it. Pretty egotistical and idiotic in my opinion. 2. Impatience with trying to understand a language you don't speak. Of course, it is easier to understand someone if you speak the same language. Does that mean we should say "screw you" to those who don't speak our language? No. 3. Fear of the different and the uncertain. If we don't understand something, we don't trust it. "they're different from us, which means they can't be trusted, we must sound the drums of war." Oh yeah. Pocahontas song. I am that badass. :P Side: Inferiority

I agree with what you say, however, I want you to know that I didn't create this debate to merely insult one person. Although Jake's debate is what made me think about this issue, I have a brother-in-law from Argentina, and he tells me about how sometimes when he is in America speaking Spanish to his friends, he overhears people saying things like "people just need to learn to speak English." I have heard similar stories from other people I know who speak Spanish. So no, I didn't create this debate to insult anyone, I am just legitimately confused about why people get so angry, and I am concerned about what this says about our nation. Side: confusion

Yes...confusion is definitely an issue. As much as I hate to admit this, I sometimes feel angry when I can't understand something 'cause it's in another language...it's more like a frustration thing for me though, and I don't get frustrated unless I'm wanting to know what is written/said. Side: confusion
Usually it is only bigots (love it or leave it types) that get angry, and the obious reason is minority complex. It reminds them that their minds are limited and dont encompass as much of the world they would like to think Belive it or not; the unknown gives some people the creeps and they dont find it exciting or anything like that. Those kind of people tend to stop growing after the age of 16 for obvious reasons Side: confusion
Side: too proud for their own good

I find it disturbing when I'm in company and two people standing with me get into a conversation in a language I don't understand and continue to speak it leaving me standing there without so much as an "excuse me!" Side: sometimes its rude
Well, if someone starts talking to me in any other language than English, it irritates me... the idea that I should just be confused as fuck because they automatically assume i'm a language expert. I'm patient with them though, but most people aren't me. They show their frustration. "listen dude, either speak english or leave me alone". Side: confusion

Side: confusion
