Why do we debate online?

It is strange how online platforms invite people to express their points of view. Nevertheless, is often that people attack and criticize and insult each other, not exchanging ideas, but just fighting and trying to impose their own points of view.

I find it a good forum to state my opinion on a range of issues which affect the everyday lives of a lot people, including my own.

A counter argument to my personal viewpoint is fully acceptable provided it's presented in a reasonable, respectful and rational manner.

Online forums offer a platform on which people can express their frustrations and deep concerns with the state of the societies in which they live as well as the ''big bad and dangerous world''.

Unfortunately however, there are a few 'cyber anarchists' on this site, as there are on most debating forums, who use CD for the sole purpose of gratuitously and aggressively attacking the genuinely held opinions of others.

These seemingly deranged loners, whose conduct is probably the result of their failure in real life, invariably have little, if any interest in the issue on hand nor anything constructive to add to the debate but permit their twisted personalities to develop enemies and demons in their imagination.

Their bolshie posts retard healthy and reasoned debate and their presence on a thread usually means that the discussion degenerates into an exchange of irrelevant profanities.

They seem to seek out ''newbies'' and launch an onslaught of abuse on them in an effort, I presume, rightly or wrongly, to test their mettle and/or to establish themselves higher up the pecking order.

Everything considered CD, due to it's freedom of expression is one of the best forums around.

I enjoy a good exchange of ideas. Often times someone will say something I hadn't thought of before or show me a side of something I hadn't considered. Other times it clears up confusion or there is a good opportunity to get your point and view across. Online you get the option of looking things up before you post to clearly show your side or clarify an answer and for the most part debates are fairly enjoyable. Sure you get some people that don't have a clue how to debate or simply want to preach but eventually you get a grasp of who will give a good debate and who won't.

Give me a break there Progressive !"I enjoy a good exchange of ideas." That is not what your party wants to do. Now if it was then Hillary would have been elected !

I'm not Progressive so it's not "my" party. Are you utterly incapable of entering a debate without bringing politics, making stupid accusations or obsessing on Hillary?

For me it's more of an exchange of ideas. Granted that only works if the opponent also has that purpose. And when opponents are simply hostile and take extreme positions they'll interpret or label anyone not agreeing with them 100% as an enemy who is not interesting in exchanging ideas.

Well honestly it is a little bit of both, debating requires disagreement and disagreements are confrontational by nature. That doesn't mean we should just sling insults at each other, but that does mean that ideas, perhaps even your ideas might be disagreed with vehemently, maybe even ridiculed but that is what a free exchange of ideas brings with.

In order to allow ideas to be expressed as freely as possible that requires free thought, free thought entails freedom to think A through Z or even than any of A to Z being absolutely incorrect, absurd and even called stupid. Ideas/opinions/thoughts/beliefs/anything along the lines of what one thinks are not sacred.

So the free exchange of ideas necessitates the happening of "verbal attacks" as not everyone is civil and all are human. If you feel like a debate is getting hostile and less fruitful, move on and stop debating with that person, you don't owe him or her anything.

Its a good question and unfortunately it's often descends into chaos as insults are flung between people with differing viewpoints.

I have been a member of quora for a long time but it's got to a stage where one is censored immediately if it's deemed you crossed the line and caused offence .

I will debate and exchange opinions with anyone on CD my rule on here has always been if someone throws a punch there going to get several back , I don't take the insults personally and in fact at times they're most amusing ; the problem I see on CD is there are a lot of rabid American bible thumpers who in fairness deserve all they get :)

I came here because I got tired of being the only one around that had opinions on these big arguments. Most people I tried to talk to are still in the herd mentality and can't be an island with their own thoughts. Whatever happened to questioning society?

I think most people would say that is for exchanging ideas, but finally debates tend to lack of well constructed arguments and if so, people start attacking themselves with personal insults. Maybe people are not aware of it themselves and think they are exchanging ideas, but they really want to impose an idea and their own beliefs, specially if the debate is about politics or religion. I'm not talking about CD particularly, which is a platform constructed for debate, but is what I can observe in other social media, such as Facebook or Twitter.
