If you adjust for welfare/benefits/etc received from the government vs how much taxes you actually pay.
Only the top 21% of earners even pay high enough taxes to support their fellow citizens. Everyone else gets as much or more benefits from the government than what their taxes could afford, therefor you have a net gain, which means most people "aren't paying their fair share." (That's the entire point of a progressive tax system)

Couple of problems here. Firstly, the top earners are precisely those with the means and incentive to avoid paying tax, as your own statements, if true, go some way towards supporting. Secondly, I'm not familiar with the American system, but if it works the same way as the British system you still pay tax on government benefits.
If you pay... let's say 60% of your income as tax. And you make $30,000 a year.
So you pay $18,000 in taxes every year.
But, then you have to do some quick math.
Total Annual Money the government puts towards Police, Firemen, Transportation, Postal Service, Defense (yes you benefit from defense), Voting Booths (These cost money so you can vote, even if you don't vote), and any other public service that you benefit from simply by living in your country. Divide that by the amount of people that pay taxes and that is your starting point.
Then you have to deduct from anything else you get from the government that you don't pay for (nothing is free). Welfare, Universal Healthcare, etc. Any Government Service provided that you take advantage of then needs to be added.
If you are getting more than $18,000 worth of free government services, then you are effectively paying negative taxes. Someone else is paying for you. (Usually people who have more money than you and do not qualify for all the benefits you do)
But if you are paying "positive taxes" (More than you receive) then your children are still paying for it also. What I'm simply stating is demonizing the only people that are really paying any taxes at all is kind of silly.

I don't think anyone is paying "positive taxes".. Everyone, including the richest of the rich, is paying LESS than the actual cost of government.. We simply borrow the difference..
I didn't read the entire thread, but I certainly don't demonize the rich for being rich.. But, I dispute your assertion that the poor pay NO taxes.. If you mean INCOME tax, then I'd agree with you.. But, the poor certainly pay sales taxes, highway taxes, gasoline taxes, telephone taxes, property taxes, school taxes, city taxes, state taxes, use taxes, tolls and fees, etc, and so on...
Oh no, I'm not saying people pay more than what our Government is using.
I am saying they are paying more than they are receiving from the Government.
For example:
Bill Gates makes like 10 billion dollars a year.
This puts him in the highest tax bracket. So he pays about 35% of his income to tax.
That is 3.5 Billion Dollars.
I highly doubt Bill Gates receives enough government assistance to equal his 3.5 billion dollar taxes.
So this money gets re-distributed to other people. For example, We spend about 1.2 billion on welfare every year. So he could completely cover Welfare for us and still have 2.3 billion dollars left for other things.

By the way, Wm, Henry Gates HAS given MILLIONS to charity, that's much like giving it to taxes … as has Oprah. What they give to charity WE don't have to use our tax money on. Now, if only Trump would REALLY help, like, maybe, to Puerto Rico, where thousands have died because HE ignored them …. except for a few paper towels and a pittance of federal money! :-(
