Because being racist is out of spite or hate but some people are just genuinely afraid of gay and lesbian people and there is nothing wrong with fear even though many believe no one should be afraid of them.

It's harder to hide your racial makeup than it is to hide your sexual preference. So if people can tell your gay just by looking at you, you're probably a flamer. BTW, you forgot "flamer" ;)

Homophobia isn't more acceptable than racism, the problem is that people say that their right to be homphobic is supported by their religion and freedom of speech etc and that if they are not allowed to discriminate against an lgbt person then their human rights are being trampled upon!!

I think this is in part because the struggle against racism reached a peak in the mid-20th centuries, and now it is taught in most schools to be more accepting of all races. This means that racism is no longer hardwired into the current generation of children.

Homophobia has not yet been fully conquered by the general public. The gay movement has yet to have it's Martin Luther King Jr. I predict that in the coming years, homophobia will slowly become more and more unacceptable as the next generation of children are raised to accept it.

This is assuming that homophobia will be conquered, which I am pretty sure will happen. The idea of prejudice and segregation is really hard to teach a generation that was raised on the struggle of the African-American people.

So, homophobic people are more accepted now, but they will soon die out. Or, at least become more subtle and thought of as more ridiculous. The homosexual movement just hasn't reached it's peak yet.
