Same reason we here on CreateDebate don't get together to provide relief to disaster zones (besides the fact that most of us here on CD hate each other): most "atheist groups" are largely based in online forums, and there's little need to physically commune over shared unbelief. I've lamented this somewhat, as an Atheist, that our communities are not so tight knit. For the fact that the church does base its common values on a placebo, it is undeniable that the church does bring people together once a week or more for coffee and doughnuts and occasional community outreach, and that is one of the ways that the tool of religion can have positive effect where we can't. We simply don't have, or need, a church to gather in every week to discuss why religion is often ridiculous; it would be self-defeating. However, we also don't have that positive outlet to enable community service, which may be part of the reason that we're so often seen in a negative light. That said, it's not as if there aren't secular aid groups out there, from the red cross to the peace corps to the aircraft carrier that they had on standby to be sent to the region THAT I'M ON RIGHT NOW to, I'm sure, many others that I'm not going to be bothered to look up at this moment. Or, you can just do what I do (and what a lot more atheists than you might expect do): Go to church and volunteer. Hey, I don't share their beliefs, but I can still serve a plate at the local pantry, and they don't mind the help.

Have you asked all of the first responders, the random people who take their own boats to help evacuate people stranded, the utility working out in feet of water trying to maintain power and phone service to those that may need to dial for help, the military and volunteers that come out to help, what their belief is if any?

Have you asked all of the volunteer's who come out after the disaster is over to help clean up, those who donate blood, food, water, clothing and everything they can to help victims try to get back on their feet, that?

Florence flooded us, we woke up to 4 feet of water in our basement and no way to evacuate with the river roaring through our basement and around all sides of our house. It caused thousands of dollars of damage and we were lucky. Others were not. No one gives a damn if a person who is helping others in a disaster is religious or an atheist. What matters is that people are helping.

Why is it never Atheist groups flocking to disaster zones?

Hello FD:

Did your church go? Did you? Do you need your church in order to do good work?

excon

Side: Talk is cheap

Because atheists dont form hundreds of tax exempt groups that are easily organized and mobilized.

Pretty fucking obvious.

They can and do. They just dont do it through atheist groups. Atheist individuals join secular organizations like the red cross and BSA to do their charity. Your argument is that because atheists dont form groups and do charity specifically through those groups that no atheists do charity at all.

Which is retarded and demonstrably false

Because there are no "atheist groups" you fallacious dickhead. How about producing some evidence to support your implication that only people who believe in God help with disaster relief? Oh but no, you don't have any of that, do you? You are too busy distorting facts like the horrible little neo-Nazi slug we all know you are.

If there are no Atheist groups, as you claim, then that is confirming what this debate is saying.

People without faith in God have no desire to give of themselves, to join groups with the mission of helping people in need.

Thank you for explaining the simple facts to everyone.

Atheists dont join atheist groups because they dont veek a need to. Such groups serve no purpose.

However there is nothing stopping atheists from joining other groups such as the red cross, BSA, lions club, ect.

Because atheists dont derive their charitable capacity from their religious position. You do. Which is sad.

There are atheists doing charity all across the US through these other groups. And national atheist groups do charity all the time.

Just because we dont congregate in localized groups on sundays doesnt mean it doesnt happen.
