As for reality, people who debate, whether wrong or correct on issues, tend to have high IQs, thus they come off as "different", "unique", "eccentric". If everyone were smart, debaters would seem normal.

In Nom's case, he comes off insane because he's an exception. He actually is wearing the helmet. It's why he can't win debates.

Half is a drastic underestimate. Most posters here suffer from some kind of personality disorder.

Furthermore, the majority of disorders seen here are derivatives of intellectual narcissism (i.e. "know-it-all" syndrome), which offers some kind of answer to your question. These types of sites are magnets for those personality types.
