Why isn't the media covering the drug war in Mexico?

There have already been over 3,000 deaths in in Mexico due to gang violence just this year. According to some sources the violence is actually worse than Iraq.

Source:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/centralamericaandthecaribbean/mexico/5022329/Mexican-drug-wars-now-worse-than-Iraq.html

Cops are being killed by the hundreds, mayors and other city officials are being arrested for corruption, severed heads with threatening notes are showing up all the time, there are standoffs between federal police and corrupt local officers, and now, in order to try and help the fight against the cartels, President Calderone is going to sign a bill that legalizes the possesion of drugs like pot, cocaine, and meth...so why isn't the media paying more attention?

The media would rather do programs on Obama killing a fly or the thing in Iran. The drug war in Mexico is just over the border and is a lot more important.

"The thing in Iran"

I take it back, you are much more informed and articulate then I gave you credit for.

The "thing" in Iran is just as significant if not more so than the ongoing battle between the police and drug cartels in Mexico. The drug cartels that you assist by continuing to support keeping drugs illegal.

The drug war is just across the border and warrants some attention rahter than none.

They cover it down here in San Diego, because it's very relevant to the way we live.

So it's not a lack of information, but a lack of relevance to other regions.

I think it's because it's not so much a threat to national security or anything the government is involved in right now. Like, they cover the revolution stuff going on in Iran because that's vital to our safety, etc. But Mexico is just that little third-world country to the south that has no importance to us, unfortunately. :|

So Iran which is halfway around the world is a bigger threat then the possibility of a Narco-state as our neighbor?

What if I told you that a significant percentage of the guns that the Cartels in Mexico use, especially assault rifles and handguns, come from U.S. gun dealers? What if I told you that almost all the drugs in the U.S. come from, or are trafficked through Mexico? What if I told you that the majority of the violence in Mexico occurs on the border? About a third of the deaths in Mexico have been in Ciudad Juarez, accross the border from El Paso.

In addition, what if I told you that the cartels are recruiting teenagers as young as thirteen on *both sides of the border?

How about the smugglers that are using tunnels to cross into the U.S. border like the 16 found already this year leading from Nogales, Mexico to Nogales Arizona?

And since when is Mexico a third world country? It's our third largest trading partner, and has a representative government that is similar to our own.

If you still don't think that the increased violence in Mexico is an issue look up what Columbia was like when it was dominated by drug cartels. Trust me, we do not want that as our neighbor.

Your arguments are impressive and I heartily agree with you.

Not really sure, but my assumption is because the Mexicans seem like less a threat to us than Iraqians are. If Mexicans get into America with their crap, we'll most likely kick their asses if we send the troops after them. Now sure, we have a body of water between us and Iraq, but those are sneaky suckers and could send a plane crashing into the country because they have better technology and stuff available. Mexico ain't got nothing but drugs and their threatening and hostile behavior. Plus, it probably depends where you live.... Southern CA, Arizona, NM, and Texas, are probably getting more Mexico coverage on our local news stations because it's right under us. Plus, maybe this Mexican drug war is kind've old?

Side: Too stupid

Because if everyone knew how much death and murder there is surrounding the infinitely profitable black market at the highest levels of all governments they might understand the best way to stop this crap is to legalize and take the black market out of the equation like Mexico is doing.

Well, it looks like a lot of the media is covering it.

Plus, here's a bunch of coverage from Fox News, in case the posted video wasn't enough:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzys-WD2l5s (Happy Hour, drugs should be legalized)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHAGZyhk5qQ (O'Reilly Factor, best one in my opinion)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV_BMeqbK54 (Glenn Beck is a psychic apparently)

and there's a shit load more coverage by the Associated Press.

I don't think US should get involved we always get in the middle of other peoples problems when we have plenty of our own to deal with we have plenty of political corruption that nobody even cares about and plenty of police corruption of our own also its none of our buisness to getting involved

Possibly because America may still be a anti-Catholic, white racist nation that simply doesn't care that thousands of Mexicans are being murdered just south of the border. This is just a possible suggestion...
