Why should we learn about US history in the 8th grade?
I think they should add an American Citizenship class in kindergarten and continue it through 12 The grade. They should base it on girl/boy scouts and be involved, teach honor, and respect, and how to not have your speech controlled by PC, and to know rights. And also how to respect rights. Unfortunately honor is void, respect is void. Many in this generation think you have freedom, somehow they took freedom from them with one hand and sold what's not freedom as being freedom with the other hand. SNEAKY! Self Control is to rule, it rules us, it gives power to us to rule us. It's freedom to direct, assert, pull back, and exercise moral control in respect to self and others. What this generation has been sold is a paper plates full of pop rocks served as a four course classy meal. As far as history class, teach yourself over and above, more than what school teaches, because they will brain wash you! And it's not American! History repeats itself, that's why you should know it, and school is inadequate, so take charge of your education and somehow seek a decent balance . History is just one part of a broader education. It needs a balance - US, world, ancient, etc. And in my opinion far too much emphasis gets placed on rote memorization - like the exact dates something happened. You won't need to know the exact date a battle happened, unless you're playing trivial pursuit or competing on a game show. But you DO need to know the history basics, because when you go on to become a voting citizen it all influences what you know and how your vote manifests into the government influencing your life. 1

It's important for us to learn about U.S. history because we pay some respect for the people who died for our freedom. We also learn about our history so we can prevent making the same mistake that the people in the past made. Finally, we learn about how the country had changed and evolved over the years 1

I think it is important to US history in ALL grades because, we learn about past events that were very important. For example slavery is an event on how us (African Americans) were migrated. I believe something bad/horrible happened to every race in history if not it is going to be made. But they never talked about on how our ancestors were kings and queens as said by my fellow teacher. Also if we never knew anything about history our minds would be completely blank about the past. We would have numerous questions. 1

We should learn about U.S. history in the 8th grade so we will be able to understand what went on before we got here. Learning the history shows you how the world became how it is today. The U.S. history has lots of very important events. History can also teach you how to think in some ways. Think about decisions, as in how you should live your life. Choosing wisely about what you will say YES to and what you will say NO to. Think about how blacks were treated before you got here and how blacks are treated now after history events that led to today. Before the people in 8th grade today got here, most of our ancestors were treated very bad such as being slaves for the white people, being beat, starved, etc. The U.S. History is something very important to everyone and it's something that you should learn to know. 1

I feel that we should learn about U.S history in the 8th grade, because it gives us a sense of where we came from. I also believe that U.S history is African-American history, because without Africans to me there would be no America. Africans brought a variety of different things that has helped our country grow and that is still being used to become one of the greatest nation's ever. 1

We should learn U.S. history in 8th grade so we can know are country been through. What heritage we came from an what are actual race. Also so we can know why things are the why they are. For example laws why are laws the way they are. We should know it because we should know what are city been through. An so we would know who invent a inventions was it a black person or a white person you wouldn't know if we didn't study us history. Also because we would know what invention black people made and what they stole from us. 1

We should learn about US history in 8Th grade because , I believe that's this is the year when kids should be generous enough to try to learn or care about the country they are from.. I say this because kids at this age are yet to find them selves and who they really are, and starting with US history should give them a clear mind set on who they want to be or what positive characteristics they might want to pick up own..And honestly speaking don't matter what grade your in its still important to know your country history, because the U.S history is your history. 1

I think we should learn about U.S history in the 8th grade because U.S history is African American history. U.S history and African American history teaches us about life learned lessons, our culture as a country, and how we became. African American history shows us how us a blacks have evolved as citizens in the United States. African American history teaches us about how our ancestors fought for freedom and liberty for better education, jobs, and just plainly things that we do today that we couldn't have back then. U.S history shows us how our country became in our economics, riches, jobs, equality and more. U.S history teaches us about our equality and rights as U.S citizens and so much more. Basically U.S history and African American history shows us how we became as a people of the U.S, our backgrounds, the wars and fights we had to go through just to be able to be the way we are today as free human beings which other people in other countries don't have. Without our U.S history we would not know all of these things, this is why it is important to learn about U.S in the 8th grade. 1

You probably shouldn't. Before learning history, you should develop your critical thinking skills - mostly so that you will understand that you are only getting the tiniest fraction of information in a history class and that you should generally treat it with a grain of salt. Heroes and villains are really just humans - Hitler was an artist, Lincoln was racist - people are complicated. So are histories - Paul Revere never yelled "the British are coming" and he was captured; Israel Bissell made a much longer and important ride without getting caught - or, maybe he didn't exist at all… ref You should also learn who you are first. Develop social skills and make diverse friends before getting bombarded with how your "people" have been at war with this or that people for centuries, etc. If you put two kids in a room - they don't know to hate each other. Take a communication/marketing class, not just to build up your own confidence and learn how to work with and persuade others, but to have some idea when people (like writers of history) are trying to persuade you... When you do get to history, I think you should start with ancient history and work your way to the present. You get to see the difficulties of not having all the information and writers with known/unknown agendas and bias while preserving a little more objectivity than people will tend to do something more recent and seemingly familiar. 1

We should learn about US history in the 8th grade because history shows us how and what got us here today. Knowing what others have done for us, we should be able to appreciate and piggyback off what they have done or do something that hasn't been done that can go down in history. Without having what people have done in history we wouldn't have what we have today which can be quite important in today's society. 0

In an ideal world, one that lives in a country that has given them everything, SHOULD out of respect and honor, learn about the history of that land. It is your heritage, your ancestry, your inheritance. But in the corrupted world that we live in, no. Most immigrants from muslim countries, or parts of africa, middle east, other asia, don't even stand for the national anthem of the nation that open their arms to give them a safe home and freedom. So of course they won't bother to learn anything about American history because we live in a time now where one can completely be against everything a country stands for and is built upon, and yet still be granted free access to housing, employment, food, money, women, and future security in that country you so despise. If that's not fucked up, I don't know what is. 1

Do you have any source to back that one up? and yet still be granted free access to housing, employment, food, money, women, and future security in that country you so despise. Or that? |
