well, i'm not a fan of MORE laws, but i'm not a fan of the current laws either. so i'm gonna use this opportunity to say that the new laws should make us more free.

currently, there's this thing called "Vice". it suggests that things people find wrong and immoral should be illegal. the thing about "vice" is that it hurts the person doing it (theoretically). in reality, it just makes a bunch of people feel good.

we've lost more cops trying to end vice than we've lost civilian lives from these vices. If people have a problem with something (like drugs and prostitution) they should just not partake in it. but why take away someone else's right to do something that makes them feel good. as long as we're not making someone else do something, it shouldn't be illegal.

this is a free country, and the government shouldn't be telling us what's good for us.

Watch Penn and Teller's "Bullshit". i haven't seen it (don't have premium cable) but i saw an interview on the show and it basically points out what i'm saying here.

although, if you feel that family values will make the country better, go ahead, but don't force shit onto others.

This debate won't get far, I'm not sure what I'm doing. So for the first and most likely only statement here goes.

Laws, new and old, what do people do with them. Hardly anyone has any respect for laws today. Obviously there are some that are blatantly ignored. A small one would be the cell phone law some states have passed. That no one should be driving while on a hand held cell phone. A bigger one was the gun law in D.C. that was laughed at for 30 years. The biggest one would be the law against murder. Just look at the statistics on murder in this country and see how much it is obeyed.

I was ranting on and on about abortion the other night with some friends and one friend looked at me and said that changing the Wade vs Roe decision won't really change a thing. What we need to change is our morality in this country. That really hit me hard. I started thinking about what she said and she was so right. As trite as this sounds I believe that iit all begins at home. If people don't get it at home, where are they going to get it???

I believe the "change" that everyone thinks they want, won't be found in a new President. But will be found in the fundamental basic rights of human beings. And this can only be accomplished by having a strong family. Civilization has evolved because of family, it shouldn't be torn apart.

Changing and making new laws won't help this country. Am I right?? Or way off track??

Laws are generally a poor problem-solving tool, but you misunderstand their use.

Laws are not preventative, they are treatment. That is, unless you create so many and enforce them to the point (zero-tolerance) where they just become suppressive, which is even worse.

Laws are there to give us civilized, just recourse for injury/loss, rather than mob rule, secret proceedings, or other unfair & barbaric systems mankind has tried in the past.

First though, you need to establish exactly what you believe needs to change about America. Morality is a subjective intangibility that can vary from person to person; not a good foundation for public policy which would have authority over all. Depending on what you feel is problematic, the steps to counteract those problems could be any number of things, but again, law is a tool of last resort.
