Will mobile devices become the dominant media for entertainment?

Statistics show that we, the younger audiences, are increasingly turning towards the Internet for entertainment. We don't want to watch Game of Thrones when it's on TV but when it suits us: after the assignment, before the assignment or at 4 in the morning. We also want to choose where and how much of it we see: one episode or all of them. Fact is, we want the choice.

In addition, almost all of us have mobile devices, smartphones and tablets, that we use in the bus, train or school and that we can connect with at more and more places.  ‘On-demand' meets 'on the go' and fits our flexible lifestyles better. With Internet becoming increasingly omnipresent and new, powerful mobile devices being produced thick and fast, broadcasters are putting their feelers out to mobile entertainment. But do mobile devices have what it takes to become the No. 1 entertainment media? Let me know what do you think!

I do love watching every show and movie on the television over watching them on a smartphone for example. However, when I want to watch something, I'd like to watch it whenever I want to, and especially when I have nothing else to do but wait, for example, when i am on the bus, train, air plane. I often travel between the Hague and Utrecht, this is a train ride of 40 minutes, exactly the time it takes to watch one episode. Though I am not sure if watching on mobile devices will ever really surpass television, simply because of the screen size, I do think that watching on demand and over internet surpasses the need to watch normal television

People will always work based from a ''mother'' hub. This will not be their mobile phone. The screen will be too small and ts not convenient to always watch it on your phone when it comes to battery durage for example. On the otherside, it will become more and more ''normal'' to indeed watch your programs on demand, and if needed on the road. Im just not convinced that any time soon, people will only use their phones or tablet. In addition, you see that providers of TV already made this switch since a year or 3 offering programable receivers that make you record your favourite shows so you can watch them back whenever is convenient for you.

In terms of volume, I can see mobile devices as already the dominant media device. More pictures and videos are uploaded via mobile devices than any other device combined, by far. Video streaming, games, listening to music, social networking, all are dominated in the mobile industry. Mobile devices facilitate use on the go, and we are on the go a lot.

In terms of quality however it’s a different picture. Main reason is the size. Not only is the screen too small compared to a flat screens or computer monitors, but the amount of functions represented in a mobile device covers a large spectrum, they rarely if ever excel at any one thing in particular. Keep in mind that it also has to remain small for it to be mobile. The size and broad functionality makes many things lag behind in terms of quality: picture, sound, data transfer/storage. Even accessibility; it is often times tedious and uncomfortable to do things with a phone or tablet that can easily be done on computer or game console with their respective keyboards and game controllers.

I suppose anything is possible in regards to technological advancement, I imagine that at some point mobile devices could be on par with larger media devices that are in the market today. I’m thinking holographic projections that create better displays and ease of control; advanced computer chips that allow for quicker speed and vast storage capabilities, etc. But as long as the size of the base module is restricted by its mobile requirement, larger devices that specialize in one or two types of media will have more quality using the same technology in that given time period.

No because I believe that people enjoy the arrangement of a cozy living room atmosphere. You can relax differently on the couch, looking at a big screen and fully dive into the entertainment program. Mobile devices are a alternative if you re on the way and you want to be entertained, but the primary source of entertaining will be a bigger screen, if available.
