Worst President Ever?

Add New Argument
3 points
Calamitous presidents, faced with enormous difficulties -- Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Hoover and now Bush -- have divided the nation, governed erratically and left the nation worse off. In each case, different factors contributed to the failure: disastrous domestic policies, foreign-policy blunders and military setbacks, executive misconduct, crises of credibility and public trust. Bush, however, is one of the rarities in presidential history: He has not only stumbled badly in every one of these key areas, he has also displayed a weakness common among the greatest presidential failures -- an unswerving adherence to a simplistic ideology that abjures deviation from dogma as heresy, thus preventing any pragmatic adjustment to changing realities. Repeatedly, Bush has undone himself, a failing revealed in each major area of presidential performance. - Wilentz

That was a really good argument. Bush sucks, always has. Who is Wilentz?

While Bush certainly leaves a lot to be desired in terms of Presidents, I think calling him the worst president ever is a bit short-sighted. In our society today we always think that the most recent example is the "best" or "worst" EVER, which doesn't really take in to account past examples. I think the worst president ever had to be Jimmy Carter. During his four years in the White House, he presided over the worst economic downturn since World War II, allowed a bunch of thugs to seize our embassy and our citizens, and supported Philippine dictator Fernando Marcos, Pakistani General Zia al Huq, Saudi King Faud and many other dictators. While Bush's track record isn't stellar, at least he has had the cajones to stand up to the people who want ordinary innocent civilians dead and who threaten our way of life. Carter was a complete failure on all fronts, and thank Goodness Reagan came in to save the country.

Good point man, Bush certainly sucks but he's nowhere as bad as Carter was.

"Bush is a man of morals, a man of conviction, and he sticks to his guns!... He still believes on Wednesday, the exact same thing that he believed on Monday... Regardless of what happened on Tuesday!"--Stephen Colbert-- The man is an idiot, but even worse, he's a puppet. How can you go through 6 years of your presidency without laying down a single veto, then go ahead and veto something that 85% of the country, democratic and republican, is in favor of? We lost 7 years of stem cell research because of Bush's religious beliefs... Whatever happened to separation of church and state?
Also, the president of OPEC basically said "tough titties, you don't know how to run your country's energy program, we're not doing sh*t for you and we're not upping our production" (No, that is not a direct quote!) But seriously, never before has a president of ours been so mocked worldwide that a leader anywhere would have the balls to say that to the "leader" of our country... Maybe they thought it before, but they never said it.

"85% of the country, democratic and republican, is in favor of?" Umm... where's your source on this one?
"We lost 7 years of stem cell research" isn't quite correct. You 'lost' 7 years of embryonic stem cell research. Adult stem cell research is still going strong.

I'm not sure about the numbers, but you must realise that embryonic stem cells are far superior to adult stem cells in flexibility and Potential. Moreover 'adult' stem cells cover only Multipotnent cells which, and while they do have a track record of success in cell therapy, lack diversity compared to Totipotent (whole organism forming) and Pluripotent (up to 200 different cell types) stem cells. Also, it is important to know that stem cells do have a shelf life, even in liquid nitrogen, although research is being undertaken to determine that shelf life.

W is just about the worst example of a leader that I can imagine. He lacks so many critical leadership qualities. Its embarressing to have him reflect our nation. I like to watch him get heckled :)

Perhaps the next one will be the worst President ever. Who wants the job?

Most reviews I hear about the current or past presidents seem to mirror the idiots I hear in the news or on TV. The only way to evaluate a President is by benchmarks. If you quantify the past President back to Jimmy Carter, all have done reasonably well with national security, money and banking, jobs etc. Carter hold the worst benchmarks in recent history. Remove likes or dislikes from the evaluation process and the US government is a strong vibrant nation.

James Buchanan is the worst.

He refused to challenge either the spread of slavery or the growing bloc of states that became the Confederacy.

Herbert Hoover is second worst.

He was known as a poor communicator who fueled trade wars and exacerbated the Depression.

Lincoln was by far the worst in my opinion. He dragged America into the bloodiest conflict it's ever seen and all the while everyone praises him for "holding the Union together". He should have just let the confederacy go.

I think the worst President was Chester Arthur. He was a corrupt official, making almost all his money because of corruption, and he spent his entire 1,262 days in office wasting taxpayer’s dollars, endless renovating and than re-renovating the White House; at one point he asked Congress for permission to demolish the White House.

LBJ gets the title because he escalated the Vietnam War that divided this country in half.
