Would legalising drugs cause more problems then it would solve?

Could legalising drugs actually help addicts kick their addiction? Firstly it would save an enormous amount of money. The police force would not be wasting time or money pursuing drug dealers, in this country (UK) or others, if drugs were sold over the counter. Also money and space would be freed up in our prison system. In addition to this, the government could line their pockets through tax, in an identical way to alcohol and tobacco products. Then this money could be poured into rehabilitation schemes that would give people an incentive to give up, rather than being punished for their problem. Taking away the taboo factor away from drugs could be the first step in winning the battle. What do you think?

It is true that legalizing it would probably help the one's who already are addicted.

But the penalty of using drugs is what keeps the people, who don't use it, away from it. People are scared of prison, no one wants to go there, and therefore they don't want anything to do with drugs.

But if it suddenly is legal, then what's stopping you? People don't seem to be scared of cigarettes, but believe me, if they were to be illegal I think very very few would smoke.

But I think you've got a point where you say that the drug addicts should get real help instead of being put away because of their problems - but I also think you can do this without legalizing drugs.

You've definitely got a point when it comes to legalization opening doors to non users. But we could maybe draw some parallels with binge drinking. In the UK we have a serious problem with binge drinking, especially minors. If we look over the pond to France, their children are introduced to alcohol at a fairly early age, and because they are educated on the matter, figures show they don't really have a problem with excess drinking. I know it's different, i'm not encouraging mothers to feed their child a rock of crack on their tenth birthday, but maybe education and awareness of drugs (plus a little experience of it) would allow people to draw their own conclusions and make the right decision. I'm aware this would certainly not work for everyone and would create new addicts, but if drugs were an accepted and monitered part of society it could have a real positive impact!

You have a point, but you know that studies show that people who are drinking at an early age have more than twice as much chance to become addictive to alcohol?

The war on drugs cause enough problems already! Legalizing drugs will lower spending on the prohibition. The spending itself harms education and increases the police state of the country.

Agreed. The hundreds of millions spent on the "war on drugs" could be put to much better use, not just for addicts, but the country as a whole.
