Zealand vs New Zealand

Right now that country's name is New Zealand & their nationality is New Zealander.

But I think they should just be called Zealand. Who cares if there's a city with that name?

& their nationality could be Zealandic

I think it should just be Zealand because it's not new any more. I mean, how long has it been around? it seems like for ever. ;)

It's actually the name of an island - that forms part of Denmark. The New in New Zealand refers to New Zealand being named after that island. The new world version of an old world country.

Actually, New Zealand was named such because it was discovered by Abel Tasman and named after the area in the Netherlands called Zeeland..."Nova Zeelandia", New Zealand in translation. As for keeping the New or losing it, Aotearoa seems like a better alternative!

New zealand was found by the dutch, and they called it Nieuw Zeeland, after their own province Zeeland. In english that translates to new zealand. Zealand is already taken.

I think the "New" should stay with the geographical title of the country.
