ending a life is never right

An absolutist view, which unfortunately doesn't work. There are many, many cases under which ending a life is acceptable. Imagine you're about to be killed yourself, and the only way to protect yourself is to kill the other person. Or if a close friend (or anyone, for that matter) is in extreme pain and has no hope of recovering from their affliction... Killing them mercifully and painlessly to spare them a slow agonising death. Killing a violent, oppressive dictator for the good of your country and humanity... Assassinating Hitler, to use a very cliche example. We should always search for alternatives to killing - however, it is not a black and white issue. 2

I could argue that there are a number of reasons that your statement is incorrect. The first that comes to mind is due to the fact that I work in a Nursing home. There are people who are forced to suffer with no quality of life or desire to continue living. I think it is unfair to force them to suffer as we do. Some people lack empathy and kill and harm innocent people they do not deserve to live Self defense War Euthanasia High risk surgery Police enforcement Abortion where legal Capital punishment Execution for treason Steering a car crash away from 20 victims but into 2 victims Society has many many predetermined scenarios where the causation of death is accepted or forgiven. Likewise, we dish out death to a large swath of the animal world for the sake of our own food and commodities. Why is a single human life worth more than the 500 or so chickens they may eat in a lifetime? People who deal in absolutes almost never have good answers to all these questions, other than citing religion, which we can then debate over if you wish, but you're not going to win that way either. |
