iPads instead of books?

As you all know, technology is increasing and many school are using iPads instead of books. Are you with keeping books? Or with using iPads? Undecided

Books have their own taste, though everybody may not be avid readers but the ability to envision the events in the book in your mind is quite an experience;that's why to me,technology can never replace the essence of books.

Sure, an iPad will never smell like a book- if that's what you're after... But for the most part, it just makes more sense in the long run to use technology instead of books. Tablets and computers are lighter, use less raw materials, and can carry many books (and notes, and websites, and videos, and music) all in one place.

IPad is better than books because then you don't need to check/buy a book at the library.

You do realize you can download books onto an iPad and read them on the iPad, giving you the same experience as reading a physical book?

An I pad is never going to be same as a book. There's nothing better than reading a nice hard cover book.

Side: Books?

I agree with this, IPads are never going to be the same as reading a book. There is a special feeling when reading a book that the IPad doesn't have. There is something so violent when reading a book on an IPad, maybe it is the bright lights that the IPad gives.

Side: Books?

Books are better because they are very inexpensive and are not a fragile as IPads. Many people will use IPads as a gaming device instead of a book if they give them out in schools to their students. You are also have to charge the IPad and books you don't need to do anything.

Good work, great way of putting that. I totally agree with you.

But if you buy a 30 books for you to read over the summer that will cost you a lot of money, but if you buy an iPad then you get books for free.

But you can rent books and that would be free. Buying an iPad can cost hundreds of dollars.

I am keeping books for sure. i think that books can't be replaced and that books have something that can't be taken away...

Side: Books?

Come on, really? if the internet shutdown forever where will you turn?

The feeling is different, especially with older/library books. You are reading something that has been read by many before you and might be read by many after you. You can see the marks, doodles, folds, foods from the previous readers and add your own.

There are also medical issues associated with prolonged use of a computer/laptop/ipad.

Eyes, posture, hands/wrists. Books can also cause eye and posture issues such as reading without adequate lighting or having bad posture habits.

Students will be going home to continue staring at these screens, slouching in their seats, and using their hands. Schools can probably improve the general quality of life by restricting use of certain technology or at least regulating their use.

On a related note: US schools should copy the Asian schools by forcing kids to sit upright with the two arms on the lower back position.

1) Not all books are available on the internet.

2) Not everyone can afford an iPad or a tablet

3) If people are used to using books it would be hard to switch to using iPads as books

This is specifically regarding schools. 1 and 2 are not relevant. Only 3 is relevant.

Okay. Again not all schools can afford to provide the students with an iPad.

PROVEN FACT:

You are much more likely to forget what you read when looking at pixels in comparison to a real book. And besides, taking care of books gives responsibility and also if you cannot have your phone/iPad you can still have a tangible book.

Maybe it's an OPINION of yours but unless you have concrete evidence I won't believ

Alright! I subscribe to the Muse Magazine Of SCIENCE!!! And in volume 18 number 3 (March 2014) the article "File not Found?" By Maia Szalavitz, specificallly explains why you have a significant learning disadvantage what you read on an electronic device. Quotes as evidence: "[He] explains that you can recall something in two different ways. You either 'know' it and it just 'comes to you'...or you 'remember' it by reminding yourself about that context an then arriving at the answer. 'Knowing' is better, because you can recall the important facts faster and more easily. 'What we found was that people on paper started to 'know' the material more quickly over the passage of time... It took longer and required more repeated testing to get in to that 'knowing state' when they read on a computer'"

The article is much longer but I don't got the time to cite all of it but yeah there is my evidence with a logical quote to prove that iPads will give you a learning disadvantage.

I choose books. I'm 13 and hate ipads , touchscreens, and Phones. Books are what we originally made not Ipads.

Most people think that "Oh yeah! iPads/ Pods are better" but, when you think about it, books can't die. Also, you can "rent" books for free but for devices, you need to pay for those.

Um first of all, i don't think u know what ur talking about because when u said "iPads/ Pods" u said "pods"

I agree with 20sloebbaka because at the library you can only check out so many books, but on an ipad you can have as much books as you want.

That's a good point but you can get side-tracked on an ipad with games and such.

But Alec if you like to read, then you won't get sidetracked with games.

I honestly love the feel of a good book. But, they use so much paper. If we were to switch to iPads we would save so much paper on books that children don't even want anyway. I know people are more accustomed to the usual textbook, they argue textbooks because that is in their comfort zone. But change can be a really good thing! Conserving on paper will make us buy less of it, making paper companies stop producing as much. Less trees will be killed and the children will feel more entertained learning.

Ipads fo sho!

And just to tip the odd more on the ipad side I will also bring up the fact that replacing a textbook costs about as much as buying an ipad.

There are health risks associated with use of electronic devices with display screens. Refer to the post on the left.

There are always going to be health risks for just a bout anything you do. There's no arguing there, but did u not refer to the argument I made above that said that we waste to much paper on large expensive textbooks that we KNOW we are going to throw away in the future.

But as you so kindly pointed out, reading books for long periods of time has it's health risks as well.

Side: iPad?

Not a fan of iPads specifically, but I do not see an issue with introducing more and more technology into schools. Books are great, but they're also heavy and it's not really necessary for a child to have to carry home so much weight every day for homework. Instead, they can use technology to have one lightweight device with all of their textbooks, notes, videos, etc.

Although I agree that carrying iPads would be more gentle on the backs of our students, in the long run, iPads will be damaging to their overall health. It is being suggested that children reduce screen time all together as this country battles the epidemic: child obesity. Children already use cell phones, televisions, computers/tablets, and other devices daily so schools should give students an opportunity to reduce usage by assigning daily readings the good old fashion way.

Hate to break it to you, but there's not much difference between a person reading a book on paper and on a tablet. Regardless, they're sitting there reading, not exercising. I agree reduced screen time overall is a great idea to combat child obesity, but you can't seriously think choosing books over iPads would have any effect whatsoever on that.

1. Using an iPad could help kids learn about the keyboard and make kids write more. Students would not have to keep getting up to sharpen their pencils which distracts the teacher and students. When you make a mistake the iPad can help you with it. When people have messy handwriting, their work looks neat and is easy to read on the iPad.

2. These days when kids make Powerpoints and posters on the computer they look REALLY ugly. When kids use iPads and laptops they will learn how to make better work and be smarter. You people who disagree are mentally retarded. Just use your common sense and know that using iPads will be more efficient.

3. Seriously you dumb people who disagree they should. It'll make them smarter and just make learning much more convenient. Anyone who disagrees should go see their health professional to check for mental problems. With iCloud they wont forget their books for the next day if they have a laptop. It is also much lighter and easier to carry around: it is a book in one device. Paper sucks and should have never been invented. So remember if you disagree go get a life and see a DOCTOR

4. I am going into my sophomore year. I do not learn anything from my text books when I read out of them. When I get home, I read about it online and I remember it. Kids aren't able to recite paragraphs from textbooks, but when they read it in a text message, or on a social media site, they remember the entire thing word for word. I STUDY my Spanish, and everything using my iPad. Once I received my iPad this past Christmas, my grades actually improved. Several textbooks are old and out dated, and it is expensive to pay for new books. They are also heavy, especially when you have to carry more than one around all day. If teachers walk around the room when the iPads are being used, students wouldn't be able to misuse them. I think iPads in school is a great idea, and it will help students learn a bit easier.

5. What are these schools doing with these extra technical devices?!? Do we really want to give $500 devices to kids who can’t even tie their shoes? Well, questions of this kind go on your mind when hearing touch screen screen tablets for young students have become all the rage. Or knowing that Some districts are even buying iPads for every kindergartner. That's too much but iPads really help "students" especially from all sides and it has much more advantages than the money needed to get it and as a proof years ago their was nothing called by iPad while now after finding its advantages schools are entering this system and its really succeeding. This electronic your hesitating of will keep you away from expensive bags and save your kid's back from those heavy expensive books your defensing for.In addition to that it avoid many distractions in CLASS.

My first and most obvious reason to use an iPad is your kids health, since as you know that each bag now a days don't weigh less than 10 pounds in comparison that an iPad weigh 1.44 pounds which is much more less and the statistics shows that 87% of students are having backache at young ages and what is the reason u think? Its those heavy books. Some people are nagging on the price of each iPad and what it cost TO INSTALLspecial applications. Well they probably forget the price of the stationery, books, and those ugly expensive bags. Aren't those technical electronics also known by iPads wonderful? This technology is reaching our comfort to its extreme all of this is because of our brains. Isn't that great??

In the second stage come the avoiding of distraction in CLASS and less noise and misunderstanding. This screen tablet ensures to deliver every little information to him since he could simply record what a teacher is saying without any annoyance, and when having a test a student can message his question to the teacher instead of disturbing whole the class by his loud voice. And also we don't have to forget the he is avoiding sharpening pencils and these things that may waste his time.

Side: iPad?

In my opinion, iPads are the way to go. So many books can be stored on one.
