Basically, if plants or animals can find a way to avoid being eaten they do it. That may be through poison, or bitterness. Occasionally an animal figures out how to eat what no one else could eat, and then we in turn can eat that animal (such as we'd get sick eating grass, but we can gleefully eat the animals such as cows who eat the grass). In part our omnivorous diet is because we need help breaking some things down so we instead ate what ate that thing. I agree we are omnivorous by history and design. Our teeth confirm this, too. Our intestines are even shorter than many predator, pretty much all our teeth are sharp and design for the tearing, and we doesnt have multi chamberal stomachs as do the cows and we do not have the same enzyme and gut flora as the herbiwhores.
