people try to use big words in order to make other people feel unintelligent

I feel that more often than not people try to bring out the dictionary during arguments or debated in order to make others feel stupid. But, in reality they just make it seem like they are simply trying hard to look smart, in other words putting up a front. Even though we use large words that doesn't change the fact that we are barbaric in nature even though we don't drag our knuckles like the supposed cavemen before us. We are reckless and potentially evil in nature.

They should know all the words that we are saying or else they are stupid. Maybe they should pick up a book and read it.

If I was debating with, say, a fourteen year old, I would not use words that they (or I) would have to look up. However, if I happen to be arguing with someone as old or older than myself, I would use words at my own level.

Careful!!!

Are you implying that you would have your opposition speak to you with words that are of a third grade reading level?

Or are you asserting that your passive vocabulary is sophomoric?

Words are the utility of the thinking mind, if words in and of themselves make you feel un-intelligent then you, not words, have a problem.

Oh, I almost forgot!

Are you asserting that you want to suffer the insult of people using little words to speak to you?

Lol. It's like that word you used, Demagoguery. I had to go check it out. Not words like sophomoric etc.

I'm glad you remember!

Words are the tools of the human mind. And apart from language men are no better than the beasts of the field.

You're right to some degree...it's silly to "dumb down" your vocabulary for arguments or conversations, but it is true that some people intentionally use big words(and sometimes even go look up fancier words) just to make themselves look smarter. There's nothing wrong with improving ones vocabulary. It's a good thing, because with the right words you can say precisely what you mean. However, some people do use it as a way to put on airs.

Lol you're right. It's also frustrating for the opponent to have to check up the meaning of the word everytime.

I don't use commodius pronouncements. It lambastes my capitulum.

They are obviously trying to make up for their own stupidity by throwing out large words that they themselves may not comprehend.

If someone is truly intelligent their vocabulary should be a nonissue. Time after time, though, these mental midgets break out the dictionary to feel a misplaced sense of superiority. The ironic part is that they usually either use the word out of context or misspell something simple.

when people use ridiculously massive words during a casual debate then its obvious their not to up to a fight about it because they don't know enough about it. So using 'big' words is a fall back so that they fluster their opponent and get an unfair win. also called being a jerk/sore loser
