Agree but your asking for students to act like an adult with respect to others and the teacher. My wife is a teacher and kids will use that to their advantage. in college you can because you are paying for it. High school and below I don't think they are responsible enough.

No. You cannot trust the students in the class to be responsible.

You can't trust students.

At my school the only reason kids are allowed to leave the classroom is if they have to puke.

You shouldn't be able to because it would lead the students to beleive that they can do whatever they want.

During school hours, teachers are responsible for the well being of each child in their class. How can a teacher be responsible for a student if s/he does not know where each student is? Asking permission is NOT just about "power" but one of responsibility as well, for both teacher and student alike. It is also about teaching children about respect and authority.

The very purpose of classroom teaching, as compared to being taught at home by a private tutor or governess, is to develop in the students an ability to work pleasantly and responsibly in a society. The asking of permission is not so much a show of power as it is of being polite and not disturbing / distracting to the teacher AND the rest of the class. There is a thing called 'decorum', the maintenance of which is the responsibility of all the members of that group and requesting for permission to leave the classroom is a requirement of decorum.
