It's difficult to answer this question without bias on any side.

What they did was definately evil - no doubt about that.

The main points to look at I feel are:

Was it a necessary evil - to go to war with the Red Indians

Could they have done it another way?

Was the outcome - Present day America - worth it?

I would say no, yes no.

Lol. But that's because I'm indian. They came to my country and fucked everything up so I don't really think anybody in my shoes would say that Europeans should get a pat on the back for what they did. They've been at the root of the greatest horrors through time.

Side: yes

So if someone or some group does something evil and they succeed, then it is not wrong. If they fail, then it is wrong. I mean, if Hitler had succeeded, I bet you that we would all be speaking German and talking about how good it was that Hitler did what he did. ;)

:p History is written by its victors.

I understand that. Especially living in Britain. But at the same time talking about how its a fair, unbiased, neutral, righteous country etc? Bullshit. Atleast have the balls to admit your position.

Hey..., did I ever tell you that I'm part Native American Indian? I'm from the Wannabe tribe and I'm waiting for them to open up a casino so that I get my fair share ;)

Lol yeah I've heard a lot about that. Turns out i AM indian :P

No country is actually right, in conquering other countries, because they are all equal. Have you thought of the pains and agony the people being conquered went through? Have you thought of the pains and humiliation the Koreans experienced during the 1930s. We, as a modern people, are just answering yes or no to this question but, we, including me, cannot possibly understand how the americans or koreans felt to the 100%.

No one, No country is allowed to rule others.

Conquest is always bad. It's an act of pure selfishness. I see no way to justify the actions of the Europeans.

Were they wrong by our modern day standards? I believe so. But their mindset in the 16th to 18th centuries was very different than it is today. I believe actions should be chosen based on the current morals, not the morals of generations 200 years after the actions should be committed.

This makes no sense to me. While you could argue there is no real "right" or "wrong" (although I would disagree), an action either should have been taken or shouldn't have been taken. Was it harmful to other people? Yes. Then, in my opinion, it was wrong, regardless of whether or not the people of that time realized it.

Could you explain what you mean?

Let me give you an example. Should we base our decisions for today based on what we think people in a few centuries would think about us in a moral standpoint? Sometimes, what is "right" for us is considered "wrong" for our very own descendants. If the Europeans expanded into America today, many people would be appalled at how they would handle that. But they're not doing it today, they completed an action that was, for the most part, accepted at the time.

There is no right or wrong. There are only choices. Some choices may have been better but so what? Learn from the past and move forward. ;)

I completely agree Joe. Why just the other day this jewish person was talking about how bad the holocaust was, and I told them to just move on with their lives and stop worrying about the past.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were making a joke.

Side: yes

Oh Shit...., did I leave out my smiley? Did you down vote me? If you did, I wont be able to edit the post. I'm assuming you didn't down vote me because you said that you were giving me the benefit of the doubt. But if you did down vote me, well..., that's just wrong ;)

I agree. Wether or not it was wrong or not , so much time has gone by , it is time to make the most of our current world for what we live in and move on . Unless people do so , beside being resentful and bitter , they will eventually become nil and void amongst the majority. Might i add , despite what flaws that came with the Europeons and others , they also brought much advancement , for the human races , with them.Whats the point of harbouring a grudge , What has been done cannot be undone , Why waste time , theres life to live.

Yes, the Europeans killed millions of people by coming over to the Americas and is rightly termed a holocaust in itself. That was awful, and the treatment of the natives by Columbus and Pizarro was indeed evil. However, are the European nations to blame for this? They were ignorant surely but that is expected considering that they were truly exploring a "New World." Furthermore, this was such a tremendous moment in history that it is impossible for anyone to accurately judge its moral consequence because no one can understand how the world would have developed differently if an alternative path was taken. Without the birth of the US, would Hitler have taken over the world? Without European dominance, would the Iroquois have taken over America and enslaved the other tribes? Would the Aztecs have continued to sacrifice thousands of human beings to their god? These are just a few possibilities because there are truly so many more, and some are worse than what actually happened! So my view to this question is no, because the world would be wholly different if it did not happen leaving me without any basis to pass a judgement on it.

Europeans brought all kinds of new technology. If they had not come, people here would still be living in tepees ;)

They took advantage of opportunities that were given to them. I wouldn't blame for that. Also, if one European country didn't colonize, another would take its place.
