Well, in a couple billion years the sun will explode, and if humans survive to then, it will be as if nothing we did ever mattered if we have not colonized beyond earth. Taking a more simplistic view on your level though, it is relative. Some who have done great things feel they've done nothing, others who've done nothing are under the delusion they've done great things. Side: just to live on it

I believe in God but if I did not it seems like the only divine source to a balanced and great life. We are here to live life to the best of our ability and let live. The best being loving, caring, honest, hard-working people. I love your answer, short but sweet. Side: To do what we must to live a life ofgood
So you believe in talking snakes. What else have we kept from the medieval times that has a mass influence over millions of people? We used to believe the world was flat, that earth is the center of the universe but now we have scientific evidence to disprove these ideas. The same for religion, we have scientific proof that disproves many ideas of religion. For instance the earth is only about 6000 years old, we have evidence that disproves this, carbon dated fossils from millions of years ago. Many say it just "appears old", the decaying of carbon isn't a look. Side: just to live on it

I've racked my brains, and come an argument as to why they do need our service. There is one reasonable explanation as to why God would decide to create the world and place humanity in it. I'll put it this way: Why do so many people like to play The Sims? Controllable pixel people does jack shit for us. But people find it fun to play, because they get to mess around with imaginary people and families, and/or they get a sense of power from having supreme control over a neighbourhood and everyone in it. It's the same thing with God. For an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent being to live alone in the middle of nowhere must be depressingly boring. What's the point of being almighty if there's nothing for you to use your might on? Hence he created the world, put up suns and moons, oceans and all that. But creating inanimate things get boring quickly. What would pique his interest is creating living creatures that can react to his actions. Even better is if these creatures know who God is and worships him. Nothing strokes your ego like having an entire species of intelligent beings living in the knowledge that you can reward or punish them as you please. Hence humanity is born. So worship him, lest he grow tired of his playthings and destroy us all. Side: just to live on it

It sounds like you are saying having faith in a higher power to carry you in your efforts is wrong. When you serve GOD (Spirituality, Faith in Good) then and only then can you serve people. Not all people can do it on their own, somebody to give your problem and stress to will enable one to be right with themselves and then right to others. Side: to do something special?
Why do you have to serve someone? Someone you have no evidence exists. Why should you follow a book that used to justify slavery and battery of women? I'm sure you don't believe in Santa clause but you believe in god. A single man shoving presents down every chimney in the world in one night is crazy right? But one man listening in to millions of peoples mummers is completely plausible. Side: just to live on it
I argue that the purpose of life is to survive, to progress beyond the current state and evolve. It is what all life on Earth does and has done for millennia. I know that many people get a knee jerk reaction when they hear a question like the one presented in the OP, and start posting anti-god related arguments, but I can't say that I understand it. Why is the notion of a god or a purposeful life so threatening to people? Regardless of my opinions against religion or the Judeo-Christian view of a god, I won’t let the topic of the OP be an excuse for me to start stabbing away at them. Read the OP without assuming there is an underlying notion and I find it hard to believe that someone could honestly say that there is not some purpose to life on Earth. this life is but a test for human beings , it is a test for each individual as to what he or she does through one's lifespan, otherwise why would we be here ? obviously, each and every test requires a great deal of effort, and every bit of effort made Will certainly be rewarded for, if not in this life it will be the hereafter . should we succeed in this test we will then have fulfilled the purpose of life and that is showing gratitude to the one who has put us through test , and we do that by worshiping him . hence , getting desirable outcome. However we do fail the test if don't comply with what we have been created for , this means that if we commit the deeds which are bad or even not doing that which is good , then how the hick will we succeed ? , and hence failure leads to the undesirable consequence in the hereafter . I'm not saying that we should just be praying 24\7 . no , when i say worship then i do mean that each and every thing we do should not cause god to be angry, and thus we should stay away from. as simple as that , we have been created to pay back a debt that has been given to us , and that is the bounty of creation . It was only a matter of of probabiliy that life would occur on a planet, and so had it. We are that occasion, and that is far from complicated to understand. There was no deity, just physics and likelihoods. We've no purpose unless we so deem ourselves to at some undisclosed, and of pending importance, task. Side: just to live on it

why? because the big bang started, then over billions of years I think it is, the earth has formed, than life was able to form on earth because it was at the right place at the right time, in the right conditions, then dinosaurs came, then a meteor hit the earth and new life was born, as creatures became complex with evolution, monkeys were born, then they evolved into humans. Please explain how there are infants that have never heard Mozart, yet can play his 7th symphony, or lets regress into simple mammalian creatures that have the 6th sense in their ability to find breeding grounds 3,000 miles away. Look up the concept of an universal knowledge/akashic field, that allows previous thought/knowledge to pass seamlessly through all living, self aware,...hell star dust configurations...enjoy! To live on it. To be sad. To be judged and put down on others. To witness horrible things. To be scared. I'm sorry but life is one big joke as far as I'm concerned. There's really no point in living. We all die in the end don't we? The earth is a sad, sad place. Side: just to live on it
