I think Russia made a good choice because at the time, it was their best option. They needed money to come back from the loss in Crimean war and ensure that Great Britain wouldn’t seize Alaska if they were to go to war again. By selling Alaska to the US, it insured that Great Britain wouldn’t gain control of Alaska from Russia, and with the extra money, they were able to expand west which was their main focus.
