The problem with this question is we don't have a clear definition of religion.

Are we talking about organisations that believe in imaginary or unseen powers that control our lives? Well that would also include government, the economy, corporations and society in general. Are we talking about organisations that formalise interaction with God? Well that would not include most of the Buddhists, Confucianism and several Christian leaders.

To me religions is the culmination of a human impulse. An impulse that we see has been used for good and for ill. It has given us the pyramids, society, laws, incredible works of art. It also has inspired genocide and evil. This happened outside of "God" inspired religion as well i.e communism. To "exterminate" religion would be to chop off our own arm. We can all still learn a lot from religion. The provable benefits of meditation on contemplative prayer came from religion, the wisdom traditions still prove to be really inspirational and after all science itself was worked out by the religious.

We, however, need not tolerate it's irrational behaviour when it comes to law making. To figure out the best way for a society to live is testable and within the realm of science and religious freedom should not mean freedom to not listen to data when it comes to the wellbeing of everyone.
