Air travel should be promoted.
While it is true that air travel leaves a large carbon footprint, its extent of damage definitely pales in comparison to other carbon-emitting activities. According to Carbonica, an organization whose mission is to work towards a low-carbon economy, commercial aviation accounts for only 1.6% of the world's carbon footprint. This is less detrimental than generation of power, which accounts for 25% of all carbon emissions, deforestation, which accounts for 18.3% of all emissions, and agriculture, which accounts for 17.4% of all emissions.
Besides the fact that air travel is not even close to being the main contributor to carbon emissions, recent studies have shown that more people have been engaging in carbon offsetting. Carbon offsetting means to offset unavoidable carbon emissions by buying carbon credits which fund projects that reduce carbon dioxide. If the carbon emissions from air travel can be negated by such practices, air travel should not be discouraged and should be promoted instead, for the many benefits it has and will continue to bring to economies and societies.
Even with the perceived "interconnectivity" that people seem to have gained through social media, social media has in fact pulled people further apart. As people spend hours "connecting" over social media, they are reducing the time spent interacting face to face with someone physically present. There are two consequences to this. For one, people may mistakenly believe that they do not have to meet up since they can easily "connect" over social media. However, physical interaction cannot be replaced by interaction over social media as certain body languages and the degree of emotion cannot be conveyed via mere words or emoticons. Secondly, people may get used to interacting over social media, hence defamilairising them with the interpersonal skills needed to form and maintain relationships. This may make them avoid real life interaction and make them more introverted. Such phenomena have already started to divide societies as people are less adept at communicating in real life.
