Debating is when you are trying to convince your opponent, or by an extension the audience, as to why your views are better than that of your adversary. Personal attacks are when people start running out of points, and grow desparate and as a result lose their calm.

From 1999, Venezuela was under the presidency of Hugo Chavez. He was hugely popular with the poor and working classes, and completely revolutionized the country's economy. He pumped in various amounts of government money into social welfare programs, and made astonishing progress: unemployment rateĀ halved, income per capita more than doubled, the poverty rate fell by more than half, education improved, and infant mortality rates declined.

However, this was only possible because of two reasons: Chavez's charisma, and booming oil prices. Venezuela has the world's second largest oil reserves, and as such its economy is completely dependent on oil. When oil prices were high (as was during Chavez's presidency), all was going well.

However, when Maduro got power, the price of oil started plummeting. Now there was a problem: Venezuela had never used it's available wealth to develop any of it's other industries.

So as the prices of oil started going down, so did the capabilities of the state to support it's welfare schemes. Eventually, as the prices went down further, Venezuela started struggling to meet even it's basic capacities.

This has been further excaberated by the steps Maduro has taken due to his lack of charisma: He has little control over his administration and has placed milllitary officials in positions of power, so that they do not rise up against him.

The PDVSA (Petrolos dear Venezuela) that is Venezuela's state-run oil organization, is in shambles. It's leaders are millitary men, with no experience in the oil industry. A good example is General Manuel Quevedo, who currently is the head of the PDVSA (since November 2017), but has no experience in the oil industry.

(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-26/venezuela-names-general-to-lead-pdvsa-amid-corruption-probe). PDVSA has a dearth of workers, a high debt and the lowest production in almost seven decades. This has been further exacerbated by the inexperience of the top brass, which consists of mostly millitary officials.

Additionally, Quevedo in recent months has enacted a series of controversial measures that oil industry experts, PDVSA employees and contractors, and even everyday citizens say are pushing the once-profitable and respected company towards ruin.

The lack of expertise among military managers is leading PDVSA to hire outsiders to keep afloat even basic operations, like drilling and pumping oil. To the dismay of many familiar with Venezuela's oil industry, some of the contracts are going to small, little-known firms with no experience in the sector.

Recently, soldiers with AK-47s, under orders to prevent cheating on manifests, have started boarding tankers to accompany cargo inspectors, rattling foreign captains and crews.

All of these combined have led to destruction of the oil sector, which was one of the only pathways Venezuela had to normalcy. Things will only get worse. (https://www.google.com/amp/s/uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUKKCN1OP0RZ)

Because of falling oil prices in the global market and terrible administration, the common people have suffered drastically. As mentioned, girls as young as 14 are selling sex to make some money. People even stole zoo animals and ate them owing to lack of food (https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1AW2NN)

To conclude, merely saying Venezuela is "socialist" and has because of only that gone into crisis. Many other have combined together to create this nationwide humanitarian crisis

A big reason for the hatred against Trump is the remarkably large amount of negative information we consume daily. If we kept our eyes open and thought about everything we read deeply, we would start understanding the rationale behind the actions, and they wouldn't be as far-fetched as we initially thought.

Coming back to the topic:

1) Chinese Tariffs: The US in the past was taken advantage of by other countries, where the US' exports were far exceeded by the imports. Now, Trump is trying to change the status quo and balance trade. In this light, it starts to make sense that other leaders aren't very fond of such changes.

Another lesser-known reason for the tariffs on China: Forced tech transfers. Sometimes, China demands that foreign companies hand over their technological know-how in order to access China's domestic market. (https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/12/12/forced-tech-transfers-must-stop-or-be-regulated-eu-ambassador-to-china.html) This is completely unregulated and arbitrary. The President is against this random, exploitative behaviour and this is another reason for his actions.

2)Pulling out US troops from Syria and Afghanistan: After the announcement of troop withdrawals from Syria and Afghanistan, the President received a lot of flak. However, the President is right as the United States need not be the policeman of the Middle East, or for that matter, any region in the world. When US troops enter somewhere, they are criticized. When they are fighting somewhere, they are criticized. And when they finally leave, they are also criticized! It is time for the countries of Syria and Afghanistan to move forward on their own, and their citizens to carve out their own future.

3) Immigration: The President has cracked down on illegal immigration, and rightly so. Data collected by the Department of Justice and Homeland Security tells us startling statistics: One fifth of the inmates in federal prisons were suspected or illegal aliens, and 93% of the confirmed aliens were in the US illegally. (https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/departments-justice-and-homeland-security-release-quarterly-alien-incarceration-report). Information from economist John Lott paint a bleak picture: Undocumented immigrants are at least 142% more likely to be convicted of a crime than other Arizonans. They also tend to commit more serious crimes and serve 10.5% longer sentences, more likely to be classified as dangerous, and 45% more likely to be gang members than U.S. citizens. (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3099992). These numbers establish beyond a doubt the threat illegal immigrants pose to national security and in light of this, the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy begins to make sense.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the decisions the President takes may appear far-fetched and detached, but carefully scrutiny and understanding of the context will reveal the rationale of the various decisions that have been taken.
