An article I found which you guys too might find useful for debating, I think : -

Dreaming, form of mental activity, different from waking thought, that occurs during sleep. The nature of dream activity has been characterized by many clinical and laboratory studies. These studies show that dreams are more perceptual than conceptual: Things are seen and heard rather than thought. In terms of the senses, visual experience is present in almost all dreams; auditory experience in 40 to 50 percent; and touch, taste, smell, and pain in a relatively small percentage. A considerable amount of emotion is commonly present—usually a single, stark emotion such as fear, anger, or joy rather than the modulated emotions that occur in the waking state. Most dreams are in the form of interrupted stories, made up partly of memories, with frequent shifts of scene.

This broad characterization includes a great variety of dream experiences. Many dreams collected in sleep laboratories are rather ordinary, but most people have at least some bizarre dreams. At the start of the 20th century Sigmund Freud proposed that a mental process quite different from that used in the waking state dominates the dreaming mind. He described this “primary process” as characterized by more primitive mechanisms, by rapid shifts in energy and emotions, and by a good deal of sexual and aggressive content derived from childhood.

Research in recent years has clarified many of these aspects of dreaming, but what may be of greatest significance has been the discovery of a biology of dreaming (see Sleep). Starting with the work of American sleep researchers Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman in 1953, studies have shown that a dream does not consist of fleeting imagery that occurs while a person awakens from sleep, but instead a dream takes place during a biological state of its own.

Thus, two clearly distinguishable states of sleep exist. The first state, called S-synchronized sleep, or NREM-sleep (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep), occupies most of the sleep period and is associated with a relatively low pulse and blood pressure, little activation of the autonomic nervous system, and few or no reports of dreaming. The second type of sleep, known as D-sleep (dreaming, or desynchronized, sleep), or REM-sleep (rapid-eye-movement sleep), occurs cyclically during the sleep period and is characterized by activation of the autonomic nervous system, rapid eye movements, and frequent dream reports. Typically, a person has four or five periods of D-sleep during the night, whether the dreams are remembered often, rarely, or not at all; they occur at intervals of about 90 minutes and altogether constitute about 25 percent of the night’s sleep (as much as 50 percent in a newborn child). Evidence indicates that a dream period usually lasts from 5 to 20 minutes.

Such stimuli as sounds and touches impinging on a dreamer can be incorporated into a dream if they occur during a D-period. These stimuli, however, do not initiate a D-period if one is not already in progress, so that, at least in such cases, dreams do not protect sleep in the way that Freud suggested. Although mental activity may be reported during NREM-sleep, these are usually short, fragmented, thoughtlike experiences.

The recounting of dreams has been used widely as part of clinical treatment. If dreams express important wishes, fears, concerns, and worries of the dreamer, the study and analysis of dreams can help reveal previously unknown aspects of a person’s mental functioning.

Imp Note : Dreams may reflect a fundamental aspect of mammalian memory processing. Crucial information acquired during the waking state may be reprocessed during sleep!

i agree...dreams ain't always the good ones...actually very rarely are...and a nightmare is very common among the children and a few teens too...so it cannot be ignored..!!!!

nothing productive is done without purpose dear...nature has given us d ability to dream 'cos it has also given us the ability to think and process what we see and hear...!!! dreaming is a process which helps us to arrange our daily thoughts and visualizations in a sequential manner so that you don't 'forget' those events...its important for our own recollections...but this process involves certain flaws as well including formation of stories from our sensual recalls...false stories as they can't predict future and our mind isn't conscious enough to 'remember' any true past event...!!! 5 mins are really sufficient for that...its just that it involves a li'l many flaws which may hopefully be remedied through the 'Evolution'!!! :)

As you see, dreams are usually forgotten in less than 5 minutes even! Even the nature wants us to live in full consciousness rather than your sub-conscious dreams!!! :P

a night dream is a resultant of what you think whole day long, isn't it? and when a person is gloomy how can his dream automatically become optimistic, more soothing and more sensible as if the dreams have got a brain of their own!!! a sleeping dream mostly feigns a person your mind is haunted with all day long, not the situation you are dealing with!!! and the optimism is also affected by the moods of the person!!! one can't dream of a happy life on his own however hard he wants to when he has underwent a tragedy!!! :D

Moreover, it is possible that a person is more able and feels more free to express his/her own self by use of words. After all, one should never undervalue the power of words, and that is best expressed in writing. One cannot fake himself or herself much through internet, and even if they do, they won't be any different in person as well, a very few who can never be trusted! I know a few of my very good friends whom I am acquainted only via internet, and I am pretty sure of their character. Thinking as such is really stupid since this world ain't full of wicked cheats, there are a good many noble people around too! :D

But a talk in general is all that is needed for a good behavior. Of course a lot can be judged from the way they write, their courtesies and manners, and even if one does fake it to impress others it is something which they will not want to shed afterwards; it will become their identity at a later stage and will no more be a mere 'faux'! If a person does lie while chatting/texting how can one be so sure as to the person won't lie in person? A person who is 180 degrees from their words will not become a 360 even after you meet them in person! Even the essays of Mark Twain were identified as a sarcastic one for granted without his personal presence...and his attitude and mindset too was only known by his works...not by any bunch of mates he possessed!

Also, considering what you said, I think a dream can rarely sooth a mis-fortunate person. You say that a dream can be a distraction and a new ray of hope, but that will be a rare exception for such person! Because as you mentioned earlier dreams signify that you are bothering over a situation for a long time; then how come a dream be so optimistic as to change my mind! A dream haunting such a person will always be of the same kind, i.e. pessimist and disheartening! Yet do you really consider there's no harm in remembering them? :D

it is really appreciable that you are open-minded...!!! i too am just and open-minded...only difference is that my mind has no room for supernaturally superstitious beliefs...i believe something to be proved scientifically first rather than living in myths and disbeliefs! maybe it is not a positive thing...but whatever i believe can never be doubted...it is always a complete truth...not a dreamy vague myth...'cos i never doubt my beliefs!!!!
