While it doesn’t seem right to go back to the time when educators could hit/beat the students to the point of drawing blood, bringing back pain induced discipline would be a far cry better than the current physiological policy focused on positive reinforcement, with praise, merit marks, house points and the like.

The point of discipline is to condition students against unruly/indecent/unjust behavior. Studies have shown that physical based conditioning is the most effective means of conditioning available, especially pain induced conditioning. One of the most famous studies into physical based conditioning was conducted by Pavlov. Other experiments have used electric shock to condition behavior in chimps, mice, and other laboratory animals. One can even see this with the use of a dog shock collar: put a shock collar on a dog for a period of time, then remove the shock part of the collar and that dog will more than likely stay within the perimeter set by the shock collar. While most studies have been conducted on animals and not humans (there have been human studies, I just don’t know the information), conditioning will still work on humans. Take an open fire for example, at some time you put your hand too close to the fire and burned your hand, now you know not to put your hand in a fire. This is an example of pain induced conditioning.

Now apply this to disciplinary actions and educators will have a very effective means of conditioning students against incorrect behavior.

Next, there is the argument that parents, not educators, should be the ones disciplining their children. To this there is one thing to say, if parents actually disciplined their children for incorrect behavior, in and out of school, there would be no need for in school discipline. Unfortunately, this is not the case in all situations and those children will need the substitute parenting of educators to ensure they don’t turn out as social delinquents.

Those items listed that are after school and don’t leave any time for homework, are generally listed as extracurricular activities. Extracurricular is defined as anything outside the regular academic curriculum; "sports and drama are popular extracurricular activities." Since general education classes consist of the regular academic curriculum, then general education classes are the entire point of going to school. The other items listed; sports, band, etc. are outside of the point of school and are done as “extras” by the choice of the student. By saying that extracurricular activities prevent you from having time to do homework, which is considered apart of learning the material in class, means that your priorities are a little skewed. If your education doesn’t matter, then by all means stop going to school and just do the other activities and add to the growing problem of illiteracy.

To the part of a job getting in the way of your homework, and therefore your education, shows a complete loss of being able to manage your life. There are an extreme number of people out there who work and go to school, and still manage to accomplish both. Not to mention that completing school with a decent grade will allow you to work at a better job; one that pays better, one that has benefits, one that has more enjoyable work, and so on.

Education is paramount in any society that wishes to advance and remain at a decent level of living standards. To put education on the back burner to other things like sports, band, and working at McDonalds is just going to further increase the decline of the society in which you live. It has happened to societies in the past and it will happen again.

Homework is an absolute must in education. Studies have shown that learning only comes from repetition and use, and is also the main purpose of homework. Students spend time in class to have the material/practices/methods shown to them. Following class students must then use the information they gained in class through use and repetition to actually learn the material. Just seeing the material once or twice will cause absolutely no learning. For those spouting about sports and extracurricular activities taking up their time so they can’t do homework, you are proving my point that use and repetition is required for learning. Sports team, bands, and all other extracurricular groups practice as much as possible to ensure material is learned, which adds to the effectiveness of the group. Practice is required in all aspects of learning anything. So if you want to remove learning of general knowledge (literacy) from schools, then I ask you to have a look at those countries with the lowest literacy rates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_literacy_rate) and let me know if you want to live in those types of countries. That is effectively what would happen if you remove homework: learning would slow and the literacy rate will fall.
